4. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to properly set up your SWISSINNO Supercat Vole Trap:

  1. Locate Active Vole Tunnels:
    • Identify fresh vole mounds or disturbed soil.
    • Use the tunnel locating probe (Figure 3, item 4) to gently push into the ground near the suspected tunnel.
    • An active tunnel will offer less resistance, allowing the probe to sink easily into the ground. Mark this spot.
  2. Create the Trap Hole:
    • Using the hole cutter (Figure 3, items 1-3), insert it into the located tunnel opening.
    • Rotate the cutter with a twisting motion to create a clean, vertical hole that matches the trap's diameter.
    • Remove any loose soil or debris from the hole.
  3. Insert the Trap:
    • Ensure the trap is unset (handle down).
    • Carefully lower the trap into the prepared hole. The trap's openings should align with the direction of the vole tunnel.
    • The top of the trap should be flush with the ground surface.
  4. Set the Trap:
    • Gently pull the setting handle (Figure 2, item 1) upwards until it locks into place. This arms the trap.
    • The raised handle indicates the trap is set and ready.
  5. Seal the Area:
    • Pack any small gaps around the trap with loose earth or leaves. This prevents drafts and light from entering the tunnel, which can deter voles.

5. Operating Instructions

Once set, the Supercat Vole Trap operates automatically:

  • The trap is designed to be triggered when a vole passes through the tunnel and makes contact with the internal mechanism.
  • The trap can be entered from either direction of the tunnel.
  • When a vole is caught, the setting handle will drop down, indicating a successful catch.

Checking the Trap

Check the trap frequently, ideally at least once a day. This ensures humane treatment of caught animals and allows for prompt removal.

Removing a Caught Vole

When the handle is down, indicating a catch:

  1. Carefully pull the trap out of the ground.
  2. Hold the trap over a disposal bag or area.
  3. Pull the setting handle upwards to release the caught vole. The trap will reset automatically.
  4. Dispose of the vole according to local regulations.

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each catch, it is recommended to clean the trap to remove any scent that might deter other voles. Use water and a brush; avoid strong detergents.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the trap in a dry, cool place, out of reach of children and pets. Ensure the trap is unset before storage.

7. Troubleshooting

  • No Catches:
    • Ensure the tunnel is active. Re-probe the area to confirm vole activity.
    • Check for light or drafts around the trap. Voles are sensitive to these and may avoid the trap. Seal any gaps.
    • Consider moving the trap to a different active tunnel if no success after several days.
  • Trap Not Setting:
    • Ensure the trap is clean and free of debris that might obstruct the mechanism.
    • Verify that the setting handle is pulled up completely until it locks.
