Setup Instructions

1. Assembling Light Stands

  1. Extend the legs of the light stand until they are fully spread and stable.
  2. Loosen the locking collars on the stand sections and extend the central column to the desired height.
  3. Securely tighten all locking collars to prevent accidental collapse.

2. Attaching Flash Heads

  1. Ensure the flash head is powered off and disconnected from the mains.
  2. Align the mounting bracket of the Gemini 500R flash head with the spigot on top of the light stand.
  3. Slide the flash head onto the spigot and tighten the locking screw on the flash head's bracket to secure it firmly.

3. Connecting Power

  1. Insert the mains power cable into the power input socket on the rear of the flash head.
  2. Plug the other end of the power cable into a suitable electrical outlet.
  3. For portable use, connect an optional Bowens Travelpak battery to the DC input socket.

  1. To attach light modifiers such as umbrellas or softboxes, align the accessory with the Bowens S-Type mount on the front of the flash head.
  2. Twist the accessory clockwise until it locks into place. Ensure it is securely seated.
  3. To remove, press the release button on the flash head's mount and twist the accessory counter-clockwise.

Operating Instructions

1. Powering On/Off

Locate the main power switch on the rear panel of the Gemini 500R unit. Flip the switch to the 'ON' position to power on the unit. The unit will perform a self-test and then be ready for use. Flip the switch to 'OFF' to power down.

2. Adjusting Flash Power

The Gemini 500R offers a full 5-stop flash power range (500Ws-15Ws). Power is controlled digitally by two dials:

  • Main Dial: Adjusts power in full stop increments.
  • Fine Adjustment Dial: Provides 1/10th stop precision control for precise light output.

Adjust the dials to achieve the desired flash intensity. The display will show the current power setting.

3. Modeling Lamp Control

The 250W modeling lamp can be controlled via a dedicated switch on the unit. Available settings include:

  • Full (100%): The modeling lamp operates at maximum brightness.
  • Proportional: The modeling lamp brightness adjusts proportionally to the flash power setting.
  • User Defined: Allows for custom brightness settings (refer to advanced settings in the full manual for details).
  • Off: The modeling lamp is turned off.

4. Triggering Options

The Gemini 500R units can be triggered in several ways:

  • Sync Cable: Connect a standard PC sync cable from your camera to the flash unit's sync port.
  • Optical Slave: The built-in optical slave sensor can trigger the flash when it detects another flash firing.
  • Radio Triggering: Each Gemini 500R flash head features a slot for an optional Pulsar or PocketWizard Radio Receiver Module (sold separately). Installing one of these modules enables compatibility with various radio triggers and Sekonic radio-enabled light meters for wireless control and exposure measurement.

5. Power Source Selection

The Gemini 500R is designed for both studio and location use:

  • Mains (AC) Power: Connect the unit directly to an electrical outlet using the provided power cable for continuous studio operation.
  • Travelpak Battery (DC) Power: For outdoor or location shooting, the unit can be powered by an optional Bowens Travelpak battery (sold separately). Connect the Travelpak battery to the DC input on the flash head.

Maintenance

Cleaning

Ensure the unit is powered off and unplugged before cleaning. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the exterior of the flash head and light stands. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by a dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Keep the flash tube and modeling lamp free of dust and fingerprints for optimal performance.

Storage

When not in use, store the Bowens Gemini 500R kit in its carrying cases in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity. Ensure all cables are neatly coiled to prevent damage.

Troubleshooting

  • Unit does not power on: Check if the power cable is securely connected to both the unit and the power outlet. Verify the power outlet is functional. If using a Travelpak battery, ensure it is charged and properly connected.
  • Flash does not fire: Check the sync cable connection to the camera and flash. Ensure the optical slave is not obstructed if using that mode. If using a radio trigger, verify the transmitter and receiver are on the same channel and properly installed.
  • Inconsistent flash output: Ensure the power settings are correctly adjusted. Check for any loose connections or damaged flash tubes.
  • Modeling lamp not working: Check the modeling lamp control switch setting. If set to 'Off', switch to 'Full' or 'Proportional'. If the lamp is still not working, it may need replacement.
