1. Introduction

The Warm Audio WA-14 is a large diaphragm condenser microphone designed to deliver high-quality audio capture. This microphone is versatile, suitable for a wide array of sources including vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, bass, drums, and orchestral instruments. This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your WA-14 microphone.

3. Setup

Follow these steps to set up your WA-14 microphone:

  1. Attach the Mount: Securely attach either the provided shock mount or hard mount to a microphone stand. The shock mount is recommended for reducing unwanted vibrations and handling noise.
  2. Mount the Microphone: Carefully insert the WA-14 microphone into the chosen mount. Ensure it is firmly seated and stable.
  3. Connect XLR Cable: Connect a standard 3-pin XLR cable from the bottom of the WA-14 microphone to your audio interface, mixer, or preamplifier.
  4. Apply Phantom Power: The WA-14 is a condenser microphone and requires +48V phantom power to operate. Activate phantom power on your audio interface or preamplifier. Ensure phantom power is off before connecting or disconnecting the microphone to prevent damage.
  5. Positioning: Position the microphone with the silver grille facing the sound source for optimal capture.

4. Operating the WA-14

The WA-14 offers several features to adapt to various recording situations:

  • Polar Patterns: The microphone features multiple selectable polar patterns:
    • Cardioid: Captures sound primarily from the front, rejecting sound from the sides and rear. Ideal for vocals and individual instruments.
    • Figure-of-Eight: Captures sound equally from the front and rear, rejecting sound from the sides. Useful for recording two sources facing each other or for specific room ambiance.
    • Omnidirectional: Captures sound equally from all directions. Suitable for recording room ambiance, choirs, or multiple instruments in a natural setting.

Select the desired polar pattern using the switch located on the microphone body.

  • Output Pad: The WA-14 includes a switchable output pad with options for 0dB, -10dB, and -20dB. This feature is used to reduce the microphone's output level when recording very loud sound sources, preventing clipping at the input of your preamplifier or interface.

Engage the appropriate pad setting if your input signal is too hot, even with the preamplifier gain turned down.

  • Microphone Orientation: For most applications, the microphone should be oriented with the silver grille facing the sound source. The selected polar pattern will then dictate the directional pickup.

5. Maintenance

Proper care will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your WA-14 microphone:

  • Storage: Always store the microphone in its protective zipper pouch when not in use to shield it from dust, moisture, and physical damage.
  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the microphone. Avoid using liquid cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the finish or internal components.
  • Handling: Handle the microphone with care. Avoid dropping it or subjecting it to strong impacts, which can affect its delicate internal capsule.
  • Environment: Operate and store the microphone in a stable environment, away from extreme temperatures, humidity, and strong magnetic fields.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your WA-14 microphone, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Sound Output:
    • Ensure +48V phantom power is activated on your audio interface or preamplifier.
    • Check all XLR cable connections for proper seating and integrity. Try a different XLR cable if possible.
    • Verify that the input gain on your audio interface/preamplifier is set appropriately.
    • Confirm the correct input is selected in your recording software or mixer.
  • Distorted Sound:
    • If the sound is distorted, the input signal might be too strong. Engage the -10dB or -20dB output pad on the microphone.
    • Reduce the input gain on your audio interface or preamplifier.
    • Ensure the microphone is not positioned too close to a very loud sound source.
  • Excessive Noise/Hum:
    • Check for proper grounding of all audio equipment.
    • Ensure XLR cables are high-quality and properly shielded.
    • Move the microphone and cables away from power supplies, fluorescent lights, or other sources of electromagnetic interference.

If these steps do not resolve your issue, please contact Warm Audio customer support for further assistance.
