2. Setup
2.1 Unpacking and Placement
- Carefully remove the synthesizer from its packaging. Retain all packaging materials for future transport or storage.
- Place the Nord Lead A1 on a stable, flat surface. Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit.
- Avoid placing the instrument near heat sources, direct sunlight, or areas with excessive dust or moisture.
2.2 Connections
Before connecting any cables, ensure the synthesizer and all connected audio equipment are powered off.
- Power Connection: Connect the included power cable to the AC IN socket on the rear panel of the synthesizer and then to a suitable power outlet.
- Audio Output: Connect the main audio outputs (OUT 1, OUT 2, OUT 3, OUT 4) to your mixer, audio interface, or amplifier using standard 1/4-inch TS cables.
- Headphones: For private monitoring, connect headphones to the HEADPHONES jack.
- MIDI Connections: Use standard 5-pin MIDI cables to connect the MIDI IN and MIDI OUT ports to external MIDI devices or a MIDI interface.
- USB Connection: Connect a USB cable from the USB port on the synthesizer to your computer for MIDI communication and firmware updates.
- Control Pedal: Connect an optional sustain pedal or control pedal to the respective jacks for expressive control.

2.3 Initial Power On
After all connections are made, power on your audio system first, then switch on the Nord Lead A1 using the POWER button on the rear panel. Adjust the Master Level knob to a suitable listening volume.
3. Operating Instructions
3.1 Basic Sound Navigation
- Program/Value Knob: Use this knob to browse through the factory and user programs.
- Category Buttons: Select a sound category (e.g., Bass, Pad, Lead) to filter programs.
- Shift Button: Press and hold the Shift button to access secondary functions labeled below many controls.
3.2 Sound Design Fundamentals
The Nord Lead A1's front panel is designed for intuitive sound sculpting. The signal flow generally moves from left to right.

3.2.1 Oscillator Section
The oscillator section generates the initial sound. It offers 47 different waveforms, including classic analog shapes, digital harmonic, and inharmonic waves. Use the OSC CONFIG knob to select various oscillator configurations and the WAVE knob to choose the waveform.
3.2.2 Filter Section
The filter shapes the harmonic content of the sound. The Lead A1 features 12 and 24 dB Low Pass, High Pass, and Band Pass filters, along with emulations of diode and ladder filters. Adjust the FREQ (Cutoff Frequency) and RESONANCE knobs to sculpt the sound. The FILTER TYPE knob selects the filter mode.
3.2.3 Modulation Section (LFO & Envelopes)
The LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) and Modulation Envelope add movement and dynamics to your sound.
- LFO: The LFO section offers various waveforms to modulate parameters like pitch, filter cutoff, or amplitude. Adjust the RATE and WAVEFORM knobs.
- Modulation Envelope: This is a three-stage ADR/ASR envelope (Attack, Decay, Release / Attack, Sustain, Release) that can be assigned to modulate various parameters. Adjust the ATTACK, DECAY/RELEASE, and SUSTAIN levels.
3.2.4 Effects Section
The effects section enhances the sound with built-in processors.
- Ensemble/Chorus: These analog-modeled effects add warmth and depth.
- Delay/Reverb: Dedicated sections for time-based effects. Adjust parameters like TIME, FEEDBACK, and MIX.
3.3 Program Management
- Saving Programs: To save a modified sound, press the STORE button, select a destination slot using the Program/Value knob, and press STORE again to confirm.
- "Like" Function: This feature allows you to quickly save temporary versions of programs while experimenting, without overwriting existing sounds.
3.4 Performance Controls
- Pitch Stick: The wooden pitch stick provides highly sensitive and accurate pitch bending and vibrato control.
- Modulation Wheel: The modulation wheel can be assigned to control various parameters for real-time expression.
- Arpeggiator: The built-in arpeggiator offers various modes (up, down, random) and a 4-octave range.
4. Maintenance
4.1 Cleaning
- Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the synthesizer.
- For stubborn dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, solvents, or waxes.
- Do not spray liquids directly onto the instrument.
4.2 Storage
- When not in use for extended periods, store the synthesizer in a dry, temperature-controlled environment.
- Cover the instrument with a dust cover to protect it from dust and debris.
4.3 Firmware Updates
Periodically check the official Nord website for available firmware updates. Updates can provide new features, improvements, and bug fixes. Follow the instructions provided by Nord carefully when performing updates.
5. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No sound output | Volume knob is down; cables are disconnected; incorrect audio routing. | Check Master Level knob; ensure audio cables are securely connected; verify audio routing on your mixer/interface. |
| MIDI not responding | Incorrect MIDI cable connection; MIDI channels mismatch; USB driver issue. | Verify MIDI IN/OUT connections; ensure MIDI channels match between devices; reinstall USB drivers if using USB MIDI. |
| Unexpected behavior/freezing | Temporary software glitch. | Power cycle the unit (turn off, wait 10 seconds, turn on). If persistent, consider a factory reset (refer to Nord's official documentation for procedure). |
