Instruction Manual

Introduction

Thank you for choosing the Piko 35310 G Scale Track & Power Set. This manual provides essential information for the safe and correct assembly, operation, and maintenance of your model railway set. Please read these instructions carefully before beginning assembly and retain them for future reference. This product is designed for model railway enthusiasts aged 14 years and up.

Safety Information

  • Age Recommendation: This product is not a toy and is intended for hobbyists aged 14 years and older. It contains small parts that may pose a choking hazard to younger children.
  • Electrical Safety: Always disconnect the power supply from the mains before connecting or disconnecting any components. Ensure all electrical connections are secure and free from damage. Do not operate in wet conditions.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation around the power supply unit during operation to prevent overheating.
  • Handling: Handle track pieces and rolling stock with care to avoid damage to delicate components.

Package Contents

Please check the contents of your package against the following list. If any items are missing or damaged, please contact your retailer or Piko customer support.

  • G Scale Track Sections (various curves and straights)
  • Power Supply Unit
  • Speed Controller
  • Track Connection Clips/Wires
  • Instruction Manual

Setup

  1. Choose a Location: Select a flat, stable surface for your railway layout. Ensure there is sufficient space for the track configuration and safe access to all components.
  2. Assemble the Track: Carefully connect the track sections by aligning the rail joiners and pressing the pieces together firmly. Ensure all connections are flush and secure. Avoid bending the rail joiners.
  3. Connect the Power Supply: Locate the track connection clips/wires. Attach them securely to the designated points on a track section, typically a special feeder track or clips that attach to the rails. Connect the other end of these wires to the speed controller.
  4. Connect the Speed Controller: Plug the power supply unit into the speed controller. Then, plug the power supply unit into a suitable mains electrical outlet.
  5. Place Rolling Stock: Carefully place your locomotive and wagons onto the assembled track, ensuring all wheels are correctly seated on the rails.

Operating

  1. Power On: Once all connections are secure, switch on the mains power to the power supply unit.
  2. Control Speed: Use the dial or lever on the speed controller to gradually increase the power to the track. The locomotive should begin to move. Adjust the speed as desired.
  3. Change Direction: Many speed controllers have a switch or button to reverse the direction of the locomotive. Consult your specific controller's instructions if unsure.
  4. Power Off: When finished operating, turn the speed controller to the 'off' or 'zero' position, and then disconnect the power supply from the mains outlet.

Maintenance

  • Track Cleaning: Regularly clean the top surface of the rails with a soft, lint-free cloth. For stubborn dirt, a specialized track cleaning fluid can be used sparingly. Clean rails ensure good electrical contact.
  • Wheel Cleaning: Keep locomotive and rolling stock wheels clean to maintain good electrical pickup and smooth running.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the set in a clean, dry environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Disassemble track sections carefully if storing for extended periods.
  • Inspections: Periodically inspect all electrical connections and wires for signs of wear or damage. Replace any damaged components immediately.

Troubleshooting

  • Locomotive Not Moving:
    • Check if the power supply is plugged in and switched on.
    • Ensure all track connections are secure and clean.
    • Verify that the track connection wires are correctly attached to both the track and the speed controller.
    • Check if the locomotive wheels are clean and making good contact with the rails.
  • Intermittent Operation:
    • This often indicates dirty track or wheels. Clean both thoroughly.
    • Inspect track joiners for loose connections.
  • Overheating Power Supply/Controller:
    • Immediately disconnect power.
    • Ensure adequate ventilation.
    • Check for short circuits on the track (e.g., metal objects bridging rails).
