K&F Concept 43mm Slim Fader Variable ND2-ND400 Lens Filter Instruction Manual

Model: SKU0688

1. Introduction

The K&F Concept 43mm Slim Fader Variable ND2-ND400 Lens Filter is designed to reduce the amount of light entering your camera lens without altering the color balance. This allows for greater control over exposure settings, enabling the use of slower shutter speeds or wider apertures in bright lighting conditions. The neutral density can be adjusted continuously from ND2 (1 stop) to ND400 (8.6 stops).

3. Setup and Installation

3.1 Verifying Lens Thread Size

Before attaching the filter, ensure your camera lens has a 43mm filter thread. This number is typically preceded by a "ø" (diameter) symbol and is usually printed on the front of your lens barrel or on the inside of your lens cap.

3.2 Attaching the Filter

  1. Carefully align the filter's threads with the threads on the front of your camera lens.
  2. Gently rotate the filter clockwise until it is securely fastened. Avoid overtightening.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Adjusting Neutral Density

The K&F Concept Variable ND filter allows you to adjust the light reduction by rotating the outer ring of the filter. The filter has markings for 'MIN' (ND2) and 'MAX' (ND400) to indicate the range of adjustment.

  • Rotate the outer ring clockwise to increase the neutral density (darker effect).
  • Rotate the outer ring counter-clockwise to decrease the neutral density (lighter effect).

4.2 Applications

This variable ND filter is useful for various photographic scenarios:

  • Long Exposure Photography: Achieve slow shutter speeds in bright conditions to capture motion blur in water (waterfalls, streams, waves) or clouds.
  • Wide Aperture in Bright Light: Use wider apertures (e.g., f/1.4, f/2.8) in bright sunlight to create shallow depth of field and isolate your subject, without overexposing the image.
  • Video Production: Maintain a cinematic shutter speed (e.g., 1/50th or 1/60th of a second) even in bright outdoor environments, ensuring smooth motion in your footage.

5. Maintenance

Proper care and maintenance will extend the life and performance of your filter.

  • Cleaning: Use the provided microfiber cleaning cloth to gently wipe away dust, fingerprints, or smudges from the filter's glass surfaces. For stubborn marks, a small amount of lens cleaning solution can be applied to the cloth, not directly to the filter.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the filter in its protective case to prevent scratches and dust accumulation.
  • Handling: Always handle the filter by its metal rim to avoid touching the glass surface.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1 "X" Spot or Blur at Maximum Density

When using the ND filter at its maximum density (ND400) or near the maximum, a phenomenon known as the "X" spot or a blur may appear in your images. This is a common characteristic of variable ND filters at their extreme settings due to the polarization effect.

Solution: Gradually lower the density value by rotating the filter, and if necessary, reduce the aperture of your lens until the "X" spot or blur disappears. It is recommended to operate the filter slightly below its absolute maximum setting to avoid this effect.
