Cen-Tech Digital Clamp-On Multimeter
Model: 66897/95652
Product Overview
The Cen-Tech Digital Clamp-On Multimeter is a versatile electrical testing instrument designed for measuring AC/DC voltage, AC current, and resistance. It also features an insulation test function. Its clamp-on design allows for non-contact measurement of AC current, enhancing safety and convenience.

Safety Precautions
Always observe the following safety precautions when using the multimeter to prevent electric shock or personal injury, and to avoid damage to the meter or the equipment under test.
- Do not apply more than the rated voltage, as marked on the meter, between the terminals or between any terminal and ground.
- Use extreme caution when working with voltages above 60V DC or 30V AC RMS. Such voltages pose a shock hazard.
- Before making resistance measurements, disconnect power to the circuit and discharge all high-voltage capacitors.
- Do not use the meter if it appears damaged or if the insulation on the test leads is compromised.
- Ensure the function switch is in the correct position for the measurement being taken.
- Keep fingers behind the finger guards on the test leads during use.
- Replace the battery immediately when the low battery indicator appears to ensure accurate readings.
Setup
Unpacking and Inspection
Carefully remove the multimeter and its accessories from the packaging. Inspect all components for any signs of damage. If any damage is found, contact customer support immediately.
Battery Installation
The multimeter requires a 9V battery (included). To install or replace the battery:
- Ensure the multimeter is turned off.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit.
- Use a screwdriver to remove the screw securing the cover.
- Gently lift the cover and connect the 9V battery to the battery clip, observing correct polarity.
- Place the battery into the compartment and replace the cover, securing it with the screw.
Connecting Test Leads
Insert the black test lead into the "COM" (common) jack and the red test lead into the "VΩmA" jack for voltage, resistance, and small current measurements. For AC current measurements using the clamp, test leads are not required unless simultaneous voltage readings are needed.
Operating Instructions
This section details how to perform various measurements with your Cen-Tech Digital Clamp-On Multimeter.
Measuring AC/DC Voltage
- Set the function switch to the desired ACV (Alternating Current Voltage) or DCV (Direct Current Voltage) range. If the voltage is unknown, start with the highest range and decrease as necessary.
- Connect the black test lead to the "COM" jack and the red test lead to the "VΩmA" jack.
- Connect the test leads in parallel to the circuit or component you wish to measure.
- Read the voltage value on the LCD display.
Measuring AC Current (Clamp Function)
- Set the function switch to the ACA (Alternating Current Amperes) range.
- Open the clamp jaws by pressing the trigger.
- Enclose only one conductor of the circuit within the clamp jaws. Ensure the jaws are fully closed.
- Read the current value on the LCD display.
- Note: The clamp measures current flowing through a single conductor. Do not clamp around multiple conductors (e.g., a power cord with both live and neutral wires) as the magnetic fields will cancel out, resulting in an inaccurate or zero reading.
Measuring Resistance
- Ensure the circuit or component is de-energized before measuring resistance. Disconnect power and discharge any capacitors.
- Set the function switch to the Ω (Ohms) range.
- Connect the black test lead to the "COM" jack and the red test lead to the "VΩmA" jack.
- Connect the test leads across the component whose resistance you want to measure.
- Read the resistance value on the LCD display.
Diode Test
- Set the function switch to the diode symbol (usually shared with continuity or resistance).
- Connect the black test lead to the "COM" jack and the red test lead to the "VΩmA" jack.
- Connect the red test lead to the anode and the black test lead to the cathode of the diode. A forward voltage drop (e.g., 0.5V to 0.8V for silicon diodes) should be displayed.
- Reverse the test leads. The display should show "OL" (Open Loop) for a good diode.
Maintenance
Cleaning
Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Ensure the meter is completely dry before use.
Battery Replacement
Refer to the "Battery Installation" section under Setup for instructions on replacing the 9V battery when the low battery indicator appears on the display.
Fuse Replacement
This model typically does not have user-replaceable fuses for current ranges measured by the clamp. For internal fuse replacement (if applicable for other functions), it is recommended to contact qualified service personnel.
Storage
When not in use for extended periods, remove the battery to prevent leakage and store the multimeter in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No display or dim display | Dead or low battery | Replace the 9V battery. |
| "OL" (Overload) displayed | Measurement exceeds selected range; Open circuit (for resistance/continuity) | Select a higher range; Check for open circuit in the component or test leads. |
| Inaccurate readings | Low battery; Incorrect range selected; External interference | Replace battery; Select appropriate range; Move away from strong electromagnetic fields. |
| No AC current reading with clamp | Clamping around multiple conductors (e.g., a power cord) | Ensure only a single conductor is within the clamp jaws. |
