1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe installation, operation, and maintenance of the Murray MPA115AFC 15-Amp Single Pole 120-volt Plug-On Combination Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) Breaker. Please read this manual thoroughly before installation or use and retain it for future reference.
2. Safety Information
WARNING: Risk of electric shock or fire. Installation and servicing of this circuit breaker must be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with all national and local electrical codes. Always turn off power at the main service panel before working on electrical circuits.
- Ensure the main power supply to the electrical panel is disconnected before attempting any installation or maintenance.
- Verify the voltage and current ratings of the circuit breaker match the requirements of your electrical system.
- Do not use this device if it appears damaged.
- This AFCI breaker is designed to detect both parallel (line-to-neutral and line-to-ground) and series arcing faults. It is not a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI).
3. Product Overview
The Murray MPA115AFC is a 15-Amp single pole combination AFCI circuit breaker designed for 120-volt applications. It provides enhanced protection against electrical fires caused by arc faults in residential and commercial wiring. Key features include:
- Single pole, 15 Amp, Combination type AFCI circuit breaker.
- LED Trip indicators for clear identification of the last trip condition.
- Improved wire bend space (1/4 inch more than previous designs).
- Both lugs positioned at the same angle for easier wiring.
- 25 lb./in. torque rating for secure wire connections.

4. Setup and Installation
Installation should only be performed by a qualified electrician.
- Disconnect Power: Turn off the main power supply to the electrical panel at the utility meter or main disconnect. Verify power is off using a voltage tester.
- Remove Panel Cover: Carefully remove the cover of the electrical panel.
- Identify Slot: Select an available slot in the panel for the new AFCI breaker.
- Connect Wires:
- Connect the circuit's hot (black) wire to the line terminal of the breaker.
- Connect the circuit's neutral (white) wire to the pigtail neutral wire of the AFCI breaker. The pigtail neutral wire must then be connected to the neutral bus bar in the panel.
- Ensure all wire connections are tight, adhering to the 25 lb./in. torque rating.
- Install Breaker: Align the breaker with the bus bar and firmly push it into place until it is securely seated.
- Replace Panel Cover: Reinstall the electrical panel cover.
- Restore Power: Turn the main power supply back on.

5. Operating Instructions
Once installed and power is restored, the AFCI breaker is ready for operation.
- Turning On/Off: To turn the circuit on, push the breaker handle firmly to the 'ON' position. To turn it off, push the handle to the 'OFF' position.
- Testing the AFCI: Press the blue 'TEST' button located on the front of the breaker. The breaker should immediately trip to the 'TRIPPED' position. If it does not trip, the AFCI may be faulty and should be replaced. Reset the breaker by pushing the handle fully to 'OFF' and then to 'ON'. Perform this test monthly.
- LED Trip Indicators: The AFCI breaker features LED indicators near the handle that illuminate for 5 seconds each time the AFCI is turned 'ON' (up to 30 days after the last trip) to indicate the type of trip. Consult the breaker's label or manufacturer's documentation for specific LED code interpretations (e.g., line-to-neutral arc, line-to-ground arc, series arc).
6. Maintenance
AFCI breakers require minimal maintenance. Regular testing is the primary maintenance procedure.
- Monthly Test: Perform the 'TEST' button procedure monthly as described in the Operating Instructions.
- Visual Inspection: Periodically inspect the breaker for any signs of physical damage, discoloration, or loose connections. If any issues are found, consult a qualified electrician.
7. Troubleshooting
If the AFCI breaker trips, it indicates that an arc fault or an overload condition has been detected. Follow these steps:
- Identify Trip Cause: Observe the LED trip indicators (if active) to determine the type of fault.
- Disconnect Appliances: Unplug all appliances and devices from the circuit that tripped the breaker.
- Reset Breaker: Push the breaker handle firmly to the 'OFF' position, then to the 'ON' position.
- Isolate Fault: If the breaker holds, plug in appliances one by one to identify the faulty device. If the breaker trips immediately upon reset, there may be a wiring issue in the circuit.
- Professional Assistance: If the breaker continues to trip without an identifiable cause, or if the LED indicators suggest a persistent wiring issue, contact a qualified electrician for inspection and repair. Do not attempt to bypass the AFCI protection.
