Setup
1. Physical Installation
- Placement: Place the switch on a flat, stable surface or mount it in a suitable location. Ensure adequate ventilation around the device.
- Connect Power: Connect the power adapter to the switch's power input and then plug the adapter into an electrical outlet. The Power LED on the front panel should illuminate.
- Connect Ethernet Devices: Use standard Ethernet cables to connect your network devices (e.g., computers, servers, network printers, routers) to any of the five RJ45 ports on the switch.
2. Initial Configuration (Optional)
The GS105E is a ProSafe Plus switch, offering basic management features. While it functions as a plug-and-play unmanaged switch out of the box, advanced features can be configured using the NETGEAR ProSafe Plus Utility. This utility is typically available for download from the NETGEAR support website.
- Download and install the ProSafe Plus Utility on a computer connected to the same network as the switch.
- Launch the utility to discover and manage the switch.
- It is recommended to change the default password for security purposes upon first access.
Operating the Switch
Basic Functionality
The NETGEAR GS105E-200NAS operates as a plug-and-play device. Once connected to power and network devices, it automatically detects network speeds and duplex modes for each connected device, providing high-speed Gigabit Ethernet connectivity.
LED Indicators
- Power LED:
- Solid Green: The switch is powered on.
- Off: The switch is not receiving power.
- Link/Activity LEDs (per port):
- Solid Green: A device is connected at Gigabit speed (1000 Mbps).
- Solid Amber: A device is connected at Fast Ethernet speed (10/100 Mbps).
- Flashing Green/Amber: Data activity is occurring on the port.
- Off: No device is connected or the connected device is powered off.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Keep the switch clean and free of dust. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners.
- Ventilation: Ensure that the ventilation openings are not blocked to prevent overheating.
- Firmware Updates: Periodically check the NETGEAR support website for available firmware updates for your model. Firmware updates can improve performance, add features, or fix bugs. Follow the instructions provided with the firmware update package carefully.
Troubleshooting
- No Power: If the Power LED is off, ensure the power adapter is securely connected to the switch and a working electrical outlet. Try a different outlet or power adapter if available.
- No Link on a Port:
- Verify that the connected device is powered on and functioning correctly.
- Check the Ethernet cable for damage and ensure it is securely plugged into both the switch and the device. Try a different cable.
- Try connecting the device to a different port on the switch.
- Slow Network Speed:
- Ensure you are using Gigabit Ethernet cables (Cat5e or higher) for Gigabit connections.
- Check the Link/Activity LED color for the port. Green indicates Gigabit speed, Amber indicates 10/100 Mbps.
- Verify that the connected device's network adapter supports Gigabit speeds.
- Cannot Access ProSafe Plus Utility: Ensure your computer is on the same network segment as the switch. Temporarily disable any firewall software on your computer that might block communication with the switch.
- Factory Reset: If the switch is unresponsive or you need to revert to default settings, consult the NETGEAR ProSafe Plus Utility for a factory reset option. A physical reset button may also be present (refer to the device's specific hardware guide if needed).
