Installation Guide

Installation of brake components should ideally be performed by a qualified mechanic. If you are performing the installation yourself, ensure you have the correct tools and follow all safety precautions. Always refer to your vehicle's service manual for specific torque specifications and procedures.

Brake Break-in Procedure

Proper break-in (also known as bedding-in) of your new Power Stop brake pads and rotors is critical for optimal performance and longevity. This process ensures an even layer of friction material is deposited onto the rotors, preventing issues like judder and maximizing braking efficiency. Perform this procedure in a safe, open area with minimal traffic.

Step 1: Initial Aggressive Stops

Perform 5 moderate to aggressive stops from 40 mph down to 10 mph. Do this in rapid succession without allowing the brakes to cool between stops. It is crucial not to come to a complete stop during these initial cycles.

Important Note on Stopping

If you are forced to stop during the break-in procedure (e.g., at a traffic light), either shift into neutral and take your foot off the brake pedal, or ensure you have enough room to allow the vehicle to roll slightly while waiting. Holding the brake pedal down on hot rotors can create an imprint of the pad material on the rotor, leading to judder.

Step 2: Moderate Stops

After completing the aggressive stops, perform another 5 moderate stops from 35 mph down to 5 mph. Again, do this in rapid succession without letting the brakes cool. You may notice a smell of resin as the brakes heat up; this is normal during the bedding-in process.

Step 3: Cooling Stage

Once the previous steps are complete, drive around for as long as possible (approximately 5 minutes) at a moderate speed without excessively heating the brakes or coming to a complete stop. This cooling stage allows the heated resin in the brake pads to cool and cure, solidifying the friction material transfer layer on the rotors.

Important: Avoid Water Cooling

Never attempt to cool your brakes with water, as this can cause damage to the components due to rapid temperature changes.

After the cooling stage, and once the brakes have returned to standard operating temperature, you may use your brakes normally. Enjoy the enhanced performance of your Power Stop brakes!

Maintenance Tips

To ensure the continued performance and longevity of your Power Stop Z17 Ceramic Brake Pads, regular maintenance is recommended:

  • Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect your brake pads and rotors for wear, cracks, or damage. Consult a professional if you notice any irregularities.
  • Cleanliness: While Z17 pads are designed for low dust, occasional cleaning of your wheels can help maintain their appearance.
  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Do not use harsh chemical cleaners on your brake components, as they can degrade materials.
  • Professional Check-ups: Have your brake system professionally inspected during routine vehicle maintenance.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If you experience any issues with your Power Stop Z17 Ceramic Brake Pads, consider the following:

  • Brake Noise (Squealing/Grinding): Ensure proper break-in procedure was followed. Check for correct installation, adequate lubrication, and proper fitment of all hardware. Contaminants on the pads or rotors can also cause noise.
  • Reduced Braking Performance: This could indicate improper break-in, worn pads, or issues with other brake system components (e.g., calipers, brake fluid).
  • Excessive Brake Dust: While Z17 pads are low-dust, some dust is normal. If dust is excessive, ensure proper installation and consider if driving conditions are unusually demanding.
  • Vibration/Judder: This often points to uneven material transfer on the rotors, which can occur if the break-in procedure was not followed correctly or if the brakes were held down while hot.

For persistent issues, it is highly recommended to consult a certified automotive technician for diagnosis and repair.
