Planet GT-806A15 10/100/1000Base-T to WDM Bi-Directional Fiber Converter

Model: GT-806A15

Product Overview

The Planet GT-806A15 is a high-performance 10/100/1000Base-T to WDM Bi-Directional Fiber Converter. This device facilitates the conversion of electrical Ethernet signals to optical fiber signals, enabling long-distance network connections over single-mode fiber. It supports Gigabit Ethernet speeds and uses WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology for bi-directional data transmission over a single fiber strand, extending network reach up to 15 kilometers.

Planet GT-806A15 Bi-Directional Fiber Converter

Figure 1: Planet GT-806A15 Bi-Directional Fiber Converter. This image displays the Planet GT-806A15, a compact black rectangular fiber converter. On its left side, it features a WDM fiber port. The front panel includes an RJ45 Ethernet port and a series of LED indicators: Fiber LNK/ACT, TP LNK/ACT, LFP, PWR, 1000, ACT, and LNK. The top surface of the device is embossed with the "PLANET" logo and has a label indicating "Gigabit Ethernet Bridge 10/100/1000Base-T to 1000Base-LX".

Setup Instructions

  1. Unpack the Device: Carefully remove the GT-806A15 converter and its accessories from the packaging. Verify all components are present.

  2. Power Connection: Connect the provided power adapter to the DC input port on the converter. Plug the other end of the power adapter into a standard electrical outlet. The PWR LED indicator should illuminate, indicating the device is receiving power.

  3. Ethernet Connection: Connect an Ethernet cable from your network device (e.g., switch, router, computer) to the RJ45 port on the GT-806A15. Ensure the TP LNK/ACT LED illuminates, indicating a valid Ethernet link.

  4. Fiber Optic Connection: Connect a single-mode fiber optic cable to the WDM fiber port on the converter. Ensure the other end of the fiber cable is connected to a compatible fiber device (e.g., another GT-806A15 or a fiber switch). The Fiber LNK/ACT LED should illuminate when a stable fiber link is established.

  5. Verify Connectivity: Once all connections are made, observe the LED indicators to confirm proper operation. Both the TP LNK/ACT and Fiber LNK/ACT LEDs should be lit and blinking to indicate data activity.

Operating the Device

The GT-806A15 operates automatically once properly connected. Its primary function is to transparently convert Ethernet signals between copper and fiber media. Monitoring the LED indicators provides insight into the device's status and network activity.

LED Indicators:

  • PWR: Indicates power status.
    • Green (Solid): Device is powered on.
  • Fiber LNK/ACT: Indicates the status of the fiber optic link.
    • Green (Solid): A valid fiber link is established.
    • Green (Blinking): Data activity on the fiber link.
    • Off: No fiber link detected or link failure.
  • TP LNK/ACT: Indicates the status of the twisted-pair (RJ45) Ethernet link.
    • Green (Solid): A valid Ethernet link is established.
    • Green (Blinking): Data activity on the Ethernet link.
    • Off: No Ethernet link detected or link failure.
  • LFP (Link Fault Pass-Through): Indicates LFP function status.
    • Green (Solid): LFP function is enabled.
    • Off: LFP function is disabled.
  • 1000: Indicates the speed of the twisted-pair (RJ45) Ethernet link.
    • Green (Solid): Link speed is 1000Mbps (Gigabit Ethernet).
    • Off: Link speed is 10/100Mbps.

Maintenance

The Planet GT-806A15 is designed for reliable operation with minimal maintenance. Follow these guidelines to ensure optimal performance and longevity:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the device. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners.
  • Ventilation: Ensure the ventilation holes on the device are not obstructed to prevent overheating.
  • Environment: Operate the device within its specified environmental conditions (temperature, humidity) to avoid damage.
  • Cable Management: Ensure all cables are securely connected and not under undue strain. Avoid sharp bends in fiber optic cables.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your GT-806A15 converter, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

Problem Possible Cause Solution
No Power (PWR LED Off) Power adapter not connected or faulty; power outlet issue. Check power adapter connection. Try a different power outlet. Ensure the adapter is the correct one for the device.
No Fiber Link (Fiber LNK/ACT LED Off) Fiber cable disconnected, damaged, or incorrect type; incompatible fiber device at other end. Verify fiber cable connections at both ends. Inspect cable for damage. Ensure the connected device is compatible (e.g., another GT-806A15 or compatible fiber equipment). Clean fiber connectors if necessary.
No Ethernet Link (TP LNK/ACT LED Off) Ethernet cable disconnected, damaged, or incorrect type; connected device is off or faulty. Check Ethernet cable connections. Try a different Ethernet cable. Ensure the connected network device is powered on and functioning correctly.
Slow Network Speed Cable quality issue; network congestion; device auto-negotiation problem. Ensure you are using Cat5e/6 or better Ethernet cables. Check for network congestion. Verify the 1000 LED is lit for Gigabit speed.
