Adafruit 1200mAh 3.7V Li-Poly Battery with JST-PH Cable (Model 258) Instruction Manual

Model: 258 | Brand: Adafruit

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of your Adafruit 1200mAh 3.7V Lithium Polymer (Li-Poly) battery with a JST-PH connector. This battery is designed for general-purpose applications requiring a compact, rechargeable power source. Please read this manual thoroughly before use to ensure proper handling and to maximize battery life and safety.

2. Safety Information

Lithium Polymer batteries are powerful and require careful handling. Failure to follow these safety guidelines can result in fire, personal injury, or property damage.

  • Charging: Only use a charger specifically designed for Lithium Polymer batteries. Do not use NiMH/NiCd/Lead-Acid chargers. Never leave charging batteries unattended.
  • Physical Damage: Do not puncture, crush, short-circuit, or disassemble the battery. Avoid dropping the battery. If the battery is damaged, discontinue use immediately.
  • Temperature: Do not expose the battery to extreme temperatures (above 60°C / 140°F or below 0°C / 32°F). Do not store in direct sunlight or in a hot vehicle.
  • Storage: Store batteries in a cool, dry place, away from flammable materials.
  • Disposal: Dispose of Li-Poly batteries responsibly according to local regulations. Do not dispose of in household waste.
  • Polarity: Always verify correct polarity when connecting the battery to a device. Incorrect polarity can damage the battery and the device.

3. Product Overview

The Adafruit 1200mAh 3.7V Li-Poly battery is a compact, high-capacity power source featuring a standard JST-PH 2-pin connector for easy integration into various electronic projects and devices.

Figure 1: Adafruit 1200mAh 3.7V Li-Poly Battery with JST-PH cable. This image shows a rectangular lithium polymer battery with a white label displaying 'LP-503562 1200mAh 3.7V'. Red and black wires are connected to a small white JST-PH connector.

4. Setup

Before connecting the battery, ensure your device is compatible with a 3.7V Li-Poly battery and has a matching JST-PH connector. Verify the dimensions of the battery to ensure it fits your application.

  1. Inspect the Battery: Check for any signs of damage, swelling, or leaks. Do not use if damaged.
  2. Verify Polarity: The JST-PH connector typically has red for positive (+) and black for negative (-). Confirm that your device's connector matches this polarity. Some devices may have reversed polarity; if so, the wires on the JST-PH connector may need to be carefully re-pinned to match your device's requirements.
  3. Connect: Carefully align the JST-PH connector from the battery with the corresponding port on your device and push firmly until it clicks into place.

5. Operating Instructions

Once connected, the battery will provide power to your device. Observe the following guidelines during operation:

  • Discharge Limits: Avoid fully discharging the battery below its minimum safe voltage (typically around 3.0V per cell). Deep discharge can permanently damage the battery.
  • Temperature: Operate the battery within its recommended temperature range. Excessive heat or cold can affect performance and lifespan.
  • Monitoring: If your device allows, monitor the battery voltage during use to prevent over-discharge.

5.1. Charging

To charge the battery:

  1. Use a Compatible Charger: Connect the battery to a dedicated Li-Poly charger. Ensure the charger settings match the battery's specifications (3.7V nominal, 1200mAh capacity).
  2. Monitor Charging: Do not leave the battery unattended while charging. Disconnect the battery once fully charged to prevent overcharging.
  3. Charging Rate: Charge at a rate of 1C (1.2A for a 1200mAh battery) or less, unless specified otherwise by the charger or battery manufacturer.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance can extend the life of your Li-Poly battery:

  • Storage: For long-term storage, charge the battery to approximately 3.8V per cell (storage voltage). Store in a cool, dry place.
  • Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the battery for any physical damage or swelling.
  • Avoid Extreme Conditions: Protect the battery from physical shock, moisture, and extreme temperatures.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your battery, consider the following:

  • Battery Not Charging:
    • Ensure the charger is correctly connected and functioning.
    • Verify the charger settings are appropriate for a 3.7V Li-Poly battery.
    • Check for any damage to the battery or connector.
  • Device Not Powering On:
    • Confirm the battery is charged.
    • Check the JST-PH connection for proper seating and polarity.
    • Ensure the battery's voltage is above the device's minimum operating voltage.
  • Battery Swelling: If the battery appears swollen, discontinue use immediately and dispose of it safely. This indicates a serious internal issue.
