5. Setup

5.1 Charging the Battery

Before initial use, fully charge the integrated battery. The SF9002 can be charged using the included mains power supply or the car charging cable.

  1. Connect the 12V DC power supply or car charging cable to the "12 VDC" input on the SF9002.
  2. Plug the mains power supply into a wall outlet or the car charger into your vehicle's 12V socket.
  3. The battery LED will indicate charging status. A blinking red LED indicates a low battery that needs charging.
  4. Ensure the device is fully charged for optimal performance, especially during outdoor use.

5.2 Initial Connection

The SF9002 connects between your LNB (Low Noise Block) on the satellite dish and the satellite receiver or the cable leading to it.

  1. Disconnect the coaxial cable from your LNB.
  2. Connect one end of the included connection cable (or a suitable F-connector cable) to the LNB.
  3. Connect the other end of this cable to the "LNB" input on the top of the SF9002. If your LNB has a BNC connector, use the provided BNC adapter.
  4. Connect the coaxial cable coming from your satellite receiver to the output of the SF9002 (the F-connector on the bottom).
  5. Ensure all connections are secure.

6. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps to align your satellite dish using the Schwaiger SF9002.

Image: A user holding the SF9002 while aligning a satellite dish, demonstrating typical usage.

  1. Power On: Press the ON/OFF button to turn on the SF9002. The ON/OFF LED will illuminate.
  2. Select Satellite: Use button A to cycle through the pre-programmed satellites displayed on the front panel. Select the desired satellite (e.g., Astra 19.2°E).
  3. Initial Dish Alignment: Make a rough adjustment of your satellite dish towards the general direction of the chosen satellite. Many satellite dishes are typically pointed towards the south.
  4. Observe Signal Indicators: As you adjust the dish, observe the LEVEL (signal strength) and QUALITY (signal quality) LEDs.
    • The more LEDs that light up, the stronger and better the signal.
    • Aim for the maximum number of illuminated LEDs for both LEVEL and QUALITY.
  5. Fine-Tuning: Slowly move the satellite dish horizontally (azimuth) and vertically (elevation) in small increments. Pay close attention to the LEDs.
    • Once you find a signal, make very small adjustments to maximize the illuminated LEDs.
    • If the signal is too strong and all LEDs are lit, you can activate signal attenuation. Press A+B for 2 seconds for -5 dB attenuation, or A+B for 4 seconds for -10 dB attenuation. This allows for more precise fine-tuning.
  6. DiSEqC Function: If using a Monoblock LNB, the DiSEqC function allows the SF9002 to control it. Ensure your LNB is compatible and configured correctly.
  7. Confirm Alignment: Once you have achieved the maximum possible signal strength and quality on the SF9002, carefully tighten the dish mounting bolts. Re-check the signal after tightening to ensure it hasn't shifted.
  8. Disconnect: Turn off the SF9002 and disconnect it from the LNB and receiver. Reconnect the LNB directly to your satellite receiver.

Note: For best results, ensure your satellite receiver is powered on and connected to a TV to verify reception after alignment.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Battery Care

To prolong the life of the integrated battery:

  • Charge the battery fully before long periods of storage.
  • Avoid completely discharging the battery frequently.
  • Store the device in a cool, dry place.
  • If the battery LED blinks red, recharge the device promptly.

7.2 Software Updates

The SF9002 supports software updates via a PC to ensure compatibility with new satellites or improved functionality.

  1. Visit the official Schwaiger website for the latest software and update instructions.
  2. Download the necessary software and drivers to your computer.
  3. Connect the SF9002 to your PC using the provided mini-USB cable.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions provided by the update software.

7.3 Cleaning

Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the casing or internal components.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your SF9002, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • Device does not power on:
    • Ensure the battery is charged. Connect the device to the mains charger or car charger.
    • Press and hold the ON/OFF button firmly.
  • No signal indication (LEVEL/QUALITY LEDs off):
    • Check all cable connections between the LNB, SF9002, and receiver. Ensure they are secure.
    • Verify that the LNB is powered (usually supplied by the satellite receiver).
    • Confirm that the satellite dish is roughly pointed in the correct direction.
    • Ensure the correct satellite is selected on the SF9002.
    • Check for any obstructions between the dish and the satellite.
  • Low signal strength/quality:
    • Fine-tune the satellite dish's azimuth and elevation in very small increments.
    • Check the LNB skew (rotation) for optimal signal.
    • Ensure there are no loose or damaged cables/connectors.
    • Consider activating signal attenuation (-5 dB or -10 dB) if the signal is too strong to fine-tune.
  • Unable to update software:
    • Ensure the mini-USB cable is securely connected to both the SF9002 and the PC.
    • Install any required drivers for the SF9002 on your PC.
    • Use the official update software from the Schwaiger website.
    • Try a different USB port on your PC.
