Introduction
This manual provides essential instructions for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your seca 703 High Capacity Column Scale with Wireless Transmission. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the device to ensure accurate measurements and safe operation. The seca 703 is designed for precise weight measurement and Body Mass Index (BMI) calculation, featuring wireless data transmission capabilities.
Safety Information
- Always place the scale on a firm, level surface to ensure accurate readings.
- Do not exceed the maximum weight capacity of 660 lbs (300 kg).
- Keep the scale away from strong electromagnetic fields.
- Ensure the power supply is correct if using an optional adapter.
- Only qualified personnel should perform maintenance or repairs beyond basic cleaning.
Setup
1. Unpacking
Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Verify that all parts are present and undamaged. Retain packaging for future transport or storage.
2. Assembly
The seca 703 column scale requires minimal assembly. Attach the column to the base unit and secure it according to the diagrams provided in the separate assembly guide. Ensure all connections are firm and stable.
Figure 1: Front view of the seca 703 High Capacity Column Scale. This image shows the assembled scale with its weighing platform, column, and display unit.
3. Power Connection
The scale can be powered by batteries or an optional power adapter. If using the optional power adapter (seca 447 or seca 400), connect it to the designated port on the scale and then to a suitable power outlet. Ensure the power source matches the adapter's specifications.
4. Initial Placement
Place the assembled scale on a hard, flat, and stable surface. Avoid carpets or uneven flooring, as this can affect measurement accuracy.
Operating Instructions
1. Basic Weighing
- Turn on the scale by pressing the power button.
- Wait for the display to show "0.0" or "0.00".
- Step onto the weighing platform barefoot and stand still.
- Your weight will be displayed.

2. Using Functions
- TARE: Press the TARE button to subtract the weight of an object (e.g., clothing, additional equipment) placed on the scale before weighing a person.
- pre-TARE: Allows for manual input of a known tare weight.
- Mother/Child-Function: Enables separate weighing of a child while held by an adult. First, weigh the adult, then the adult holding the child. The scale calculates the child's weight.
- HOLD / auto-HOLD: Freezes the displayed weight value, useful for patients who cannot stand still. Auto-HOLD automatically freezes the stable weight.
- BMI: After weighing, input the patient's height using the controls to calculate and display their Body Mass Index.
- auto-CLEAR: Resets the scale to zero after a measurement.
- lbs/kg switch-over: Toggles between pounds and kilograms for weight display.
- Damping: Adjusts the scale's sensitivity to movement, providing a more stable reading for restless patients.
3. Wireless Transmission (SEND/PRINT)
The seca 703 features wireless transmission capabilities. Use the SEND/PRINT function to transmit measurement data to compatible seca devices or software. Refer to the separate wireless module manual for detailed pairing and data transfer instructions.
4. Using the seca 220 Measuring Rod
The integrated seca 220 measuring rod allows for simultaneous height measurement. Extend the measuring rod and position the headpiece correctly on the patient's head while they stand on the scale. Read the height directly from the rod. This height can then be used for BMI calculation.

Maintenance
1. Cleaning
Clean the scale regularly with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. Do not use abrasive cleaners or immerse the scale in water. Ensure the display and buttons are kept dry.
2. Battery Replacement
If the scale is battery-powered, replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display. Use the specified battery type and dispose of old batteries responsibly.
3. Calibration
The seca 703 is factory-calibrated. If you suspect inaccuracies, contact authorized seca service personnel for recalibration. Do not attempt to calibrate the scale yourself.
4. Storage
Store the scale in a dry, dust-free environment. If storing for an extended period, remove batteries to prevent leakage.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Scale does not turn on | Dead batteries or power adapter not connected/faulty. | Replace batteries or check power adapter connection and functionality. |
| Inaccurate readings | Uneven surface, scale overloaded, or calibration issue. | Place on a firm, level surface. Ensure weight is within capacity. Contact service for calibration. |
| Display shows "Err" | Overload or internal error. | Remove weight from scale. If error persists, restart scale. If still present, contact support. |
| Wireless transmission failure | Device not paired, out of range, or interference. | Ensure devices are paired and within range. Check for sources of interference. |
