- MIDI Out (Optional): If connecting to external MIDI hardware, use a standard 5-pin MIDI cable to connect the VI61's MIDI Out port to the MIDI In port of your external device.
- Sustain Pedal (Optional): Connect a standard 1/4-inch TS sustain pedal to the SUSTAIN input on the rear panel for piano-style sustain functionality.
- External Power (Optional): If using the VI61 without a computer (e.g., with external MIDI gear only), an optional 9V DC, 500mA power adapter (not included) can be connected to the POWER input.

5. Operating the VI61
5.1. Keyboard Keys
The VI61 features 61 velocity-sensitive semi-weighted keys with aftertouch. This allows for dynamic and expressive playing, responding to both how hard you strike a key and how much pressure you apply after the initial press. Use the Octave Up/Down buttons to shift the keyboard's range across the full melodic spectrum.

5.2. RGB Trigger Pads
The 16 velocity-sensitive RGB trigger pads provide a responsive interface for finger drumming, launching clips, or triggering samples. The illuminated RGB feedback changes based on velocity, offering visual cues during performance.

5.3. Assignable Knobs and Buttons
The VI61 features 16 assignable knobs and 48 assignable buttons. These controls can be mapped to various parameters within your music software, allowing for hands-on manipulation of filters, volume levels, effects, and virtual instrument settings. The illuminated buttons and LED screen provide clear visual feedback on current settings and assignments.

5.4. Pitch and Modulation Wheels
The pitch bend and modulation wheels allow for real-time expressive control over your sounds. The pitch wheel typically alters the pitch of notes, while the modulation wheel can be assigned to control various parameters like vibrato, filter cutoff, or tremolo, depending on your software instrument.
5.5. DAW Integration
The Alesis VI61 is designed for seamless integration with major Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). It often features auto-mapping capabilities, allowing its controls to automatically configure themselves to common functions within your chosen software, streamlining your workflow.
