5. Setup

5.1. Battery Installation

  1. Open the detector casing by unscrewing the retaining screws, usually located at the bottom or back.
  2. Insert the three (3) AA alkaline batteries into the battery compartment, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  3. Close the casing securely.

5.2. Mounting Location

Choose a mounting location that provides optimal coverage of the desired area, typically 2.1 to 2.7 meters (7 to 9 feet) above ground. Consider the following:

  • Coverage Area: The detector has an 11x11 meter (35x35 feet) range with a 90° double optical detection pattern.
  • Obstructions: Avoid placing the detector where large objects (trees, bushes, vehicles) might obstruct its field of view.
  • Heat Sources: Do not aim the detector directly at heat sources (e.g., air conditioning units, vents, reflective surfaces) that could cause false alarms.
  • Pet Immunity: For optimal pet immunity (up to 40 kg), mount the detector at the recommended height and ensure pets cannot climb into the detection zone.

5.3. Installation

  1. Mark the desired mounting holes on the wall using the detector's base as a template.
  2. Drill pilot holes and insert wall anchors if necessary.
  3. Secure the detector's base to the wall using the provided screws.
  4. Attach the main body of the detector to the base and secure it.

5.4. Pairing with a Security System

The PMD85 is a wireless detector operating at 868 MHz. Refer to your Paradox security system's manual for specific instructions on how to enroll or pair new wireless devices. Generally, the process involves:

  • Putting your security panel into 'enrollment' or 'programming' mode.
  • Activating the PMD85 detector (e.g., by triggering it or pressing a tamper switch) to send its unique serial number to the panel.
  • Confirming the enrollment on the security panel.

6. Operating the Detector

Once installed and paired, the PMD85 detector continuously monitors its detection zone for motion. When motion is detected, it transmits a signal to your Paradox security system.

  • Detection Principle: The detector uses dual infrared sensors to detect changes in heat signatures within its field of view.
  • Digital Signal Analysis: Advanced algorithms differentiate between human movement and environmental disturbances, reducing false alarms.
  • Pet Immunity: The PMD85 is designed to ignore animals weighing up to 40 kg (88 lbs) when installed correctly. This feature helps prevent false alarms caused by pets.
  • LED Indicator: A small LED on the detector typically illuminates when motion is detected or during testing, providing visual feedback.

7. Maintenance

7.1. Cleaning

Periodically clean the detector's lens and casing to ensure optimal performance. Dust, dirt, or spiderwebs can obstruct the sensor's view.

  • Gently wipe the outer casing and lens with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Do not use harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive materials.

7.2. Battery Replacement

The PMD85 uses 3AA alkaline batteries. The security system will typically indicate a low battery condition for the detector. Replace all three batteries simultaneously when a low battery warning is issued.

  1. Disarm your security system before opening the detector.
  2. Open the detector casing as described in the installation section.
  3. Remove the old batteries and dispose of them properly.
  4. Insert new 3AA alkaline batteries, observing correct polarity.
  5. Close the casing securely.
  6. Test the detector to ensure it communicates with the security system.

8. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your Paradox PMD85 detector, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
False Alarms
  • Movement of small animals (above 40kg immunity)
  • Direct sunlight or heat sources
  • Moving objects (e.g., branches, flags)
  • Improper mounting height
  • Verify mounting height and ensure pets cannot enter the detection zone.
  • Relocate the detector away from direct heat or sunlight.
  • Clear obstructions from the detection path.
  • Adjust sensitivity if available (refer to advanced settings in your security panel manual).
No Detection
  • Dead or low batteries
  • Obstruction of the lens
  • Detector out of range of the security panel
  • Detector not properly paired
  • Replace batteries.
  • Clean the lens.
  • Check the wireless signal strength at the detector's location.
  • Re-pair the detector with the security system.
Low Battery Warning
  • Batteries are nearing end of life
  • Replace all three AA alkaline batteries immediately.
