Introduction

The Shure SM35 Performance Headset Condenser Microphone is engineered for active performers and multi-instrumentalists, providing hands-free audio capture. Its design focuses on clear vocal reproduction and effective rejection of unwanted sounds in live performance environments.

Key features include:

  • Hands-Free Operation: Designed for performers requiring freedom of movement.
  • Unidirectional Cardioid Polar Pattern: Minimizes feedback and signal bleed by focusing on the sound source directly in front of the microphone.
  • Lightweight and Low-Profile Design: Ensures comfortable wear during extended use.
  • Flexible Gooseneck: Allows for precise microphone placement to optimize sound capture.
  • Snap-Fit Windscreens: Reduces plosives, breath, and wind noise for clear audio.
  • TQG Connector: Compatible with Shure wireless bodypacks (e.g., BLX1) for seamless integration into wireless systems.

Setup

This SM35 model features a TQG (TA4F) connector, designed for direct connection to compatible Shure wireless bodypack transmitters. Ensure your wireless system supports a TA4F input.

Operating Instructions

Wearing the Headset

The SM35 headset is designed for a secure and comfortable fit. Place the wireframe over your head, ensuring the ear hooks rest gently behind your ears. The microphone boom should extend from the side of your face.

Microphone Placement

Utilize the flexible gooseneck to position the microphone capsule approximately 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) from the corner of your mouth. This optimal distance helps capture clear vocals while minimizing breath noises and plosives. Adjust the gooseneck as needed to maintain consistent distance during performance.

Using the Windscreens

Attach one of the included snap-fit windscreens to the microphone capsule. The windscreen helps to reduce unwanted breath sounds, plosives (harsh 'p' and 'b' sounds), and wind noise, ensuring cleaner and more intelligible audio output.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Shure SM35 microphone, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Gently wipe the microphone and headset frame with a soft, dry cloth after each use. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Windscreens: The foam windscreens can be carefully removed and hand-washed with mild soap and water. Allow them to air dry completely before reattaching. Replace windscreens if they become damaged or lose their effectiveness.
  • Storage: Store the microphone in a clean, dry place, away from extreme temperatures and humidity. Avoid coiling the cable tightly to prevent damage.
  • Connector Care: Keep the TQG connector clean and free of debris. Avoid excessive force when connecting or disconnecting to prevent damage to the pins.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Shure SM35 microphone, consider the following:

  • No Sound Output:
    • Ensure the TQG connector is fully and securely seated in the wireless bodypack.
    • Verify that the wireless bodypack is powered on and properly linked to its receiver.
    • Check the battery level of your wireless bodypack.
    • Confirm that the audio input on your mixer or sound system is correctly configured and not muted.
  • Low Volume or Weak Signal:
    • Adjust the gain settings on your wireless bodypack and/or mixer.
    • Ensure the microphone capsule is positioned correctly, 1-2 inches from your mouth.
  • Feedback or Unwanted Noise:
    • The SM35 has a cardioid pattern; ensure monitors and speakers are not directly in front of the microphone capsule.
    • Reduce overall system gain if feedback persists.
    • Check for loose connections at the TQG connector, as sensitive contacts can cause crackling if not secure.
    • Ensure windscreens are properly installed to reduce breath and wind noise.
  • Intermittent Audio or Crackling:
    • Inspect the TQG connector for any damage or debris.
    • Ensure the cable is not strained or kinked.
    • Test with a different wireless bodypack or cable if possible to isolate the issue.
