Setup and Installation

Proper placement and installation are crucial for the effective operation of your smoke alarm. Follow these guidelines:

  1. Choose the Right Location: Install at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home, including basements and in every bedroom. For best protection, install alarms in hallways outside of sleeping areas.
  2. Avoid Problem Areas: Do not install near windows, doors, or forced-air vents where drafts could interfere with smoke reaching the alarm. Keep alarms at least 20 feet (6 meters) away from appliances that produce combustion particles (furnaces, water heaters, space heaters) and cooking appliances.
  3. Mounting:
    • For ceiling mounting, place the alarm in the center of the ceiling.
    • For wall mounting, the top of the alarm should be between 4 and 12 inches (10 and 30 cm) from the ceiling.
  4. Installation Steps:
    • Attach the mounting bracket to the ceiling or wall using the provided screws and anchors.
    • Align the alarm with the mounting bracket and twist clockwise until it locks into place.
    • The alarm will activate automatically once mounted.

Operating Instructions

Testing the Alarm

Test your smoke alarm weekly to ensure it is functioning correctly.

  1. Press and hold the Test/Silence button on the alarm cover.
  2. The alarm will sound a loud, pulsating alarm. This indicates the alarm is working.
  3. Release the button. The alarm will stop.

If the alarm does not sound during testing, refer to the Troubleshooting section.

Silencing a Nuisance Alarm

If a non-emergency situation (e.g., cooking smoke) causes the alarm to sound, you can temporarily silence it:

  1. Press the Test/Silence button.
  2. The alarm will enter a temporary silence mode for approximately 10 minutes.
  3. The alarm will automatically reset after the silence period if the smoke has cleared. If smoke is still present, the alarm will reactivate.

Caution: Do not use the silence feature for actual fire conditions. Always evacuate immediately if a real fire is suspected.
