Initial Setup
Battery Installation and Charging
Before first use, ensure the battery is fully charged to optimize performance and battery life.
- Align the battery with the grooves on the back of the radio and slide it upwards until it clicks securely into place.
- Place the radio, with the battery attached, into the charging cradle.
- Connect the AC adapter to the charging cradle and plug the adapter into a standard wall outlet.
- The indicator light on the charging cradle will typically illuminate red during charging and turn green when the battery is fully charged.
Antenna Attachment
Carefully screw the antenna clockwise into the connector located on the top of the radio. Tighten it firmly by hand, but do not overtighten to avoid damage.
Belt Clip and Hand Strap
Attach the belt clip to the designated area on the back of the radio using the provided screws. Secure the hand strap to the loop on the radio for convenient carrying and to prevent accidental drops.
Operating Instructions
Power On/Off and Volume Control
To power on the radio, rotate the power/volume knob (located on top of the radio) clockwise. Continue rotating to increase the volume. To power off, rotate the knob counter-clockwise until you hear a click.
Frequency and Channel Selection
The BF-F8+ supports two primary operating modes: Frequency Mode (VFO) and Channel Mode (MR).
- Press the VFO/MR button to toggle between Frequency Mode and Channel Mode.
- In Frequency Mode, you can directly input desired frequencies using the numerical keypad.
- In Channel Mode, use the UP/DOWN arrow keys to scroll through pre-programmed channels.
Transmitting and Receiving
To transmit, press and hold the PTT (Push-To-Talk) button located on the left side of the radio. Speak clearly into the microphone. Release the PTT button to return to receive mode.
Dual Band Operation
The radio can monitor two different frequencies simultaneously (A/B band). Press the A/B button to switch the active transmit frequency between the upper and lower display lines.
VOX Function (Voice Operated Transmission)
The VOX function allows for hands-free transmission. When activated, the radio will automatically transmit when it detects your voice, eliminating the need to press the PTT button. Refer to the detailed user manual for instructions on enabling and adjusting VOX sensitivity.
BCLO (Busy Channel Lock-Out)
BCLO prevents the radio from transmitting on a channel that is currently in use, thereby avoiding interference with ongoing communications. This feature can be configured within the radio's menu settings.

Maintenance and Care
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your radio.
- Keep the radio dry. Avoid exposing it to rain, moisture, or corrosive liquids.
- Clean the radio's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive cleaners.
- Store the radio in a cool, dry place when not in use for extended periods.
- Periodically inspect the battery contacts and clean them if necessary to ensure proper charging and connection.
Battery Care
To maximize the lifespan of your Li-ion battery, avoid frequent deep discharges and prolonged overcharging. Charge the battery within the recommended temperature range of 0°C to 40°C (32°F to 104°F).
