Hasbro Gaming Scrabble Game Instruction Manual

Model: A8166

Introduction

Welcome to the classic game of Scrabble! This manual provides comprehensive instructions for setting up, playing, and maintaining your Hasbro Gaming Scrabble Game, Model A8166. Scrabble is a word game where 2 to 4 players score points by placing tiles, each bearing a single letter, onto a game board. The tiles form words in crossword fashion across and down the board, and each letter carries a point value. The objective is to achieve the highest score.

Your Hasbro Gaming Scrabble Game includes the following components:

Setup

  1. Unfold the Gameboard: Place the gameboard on a flat surface. Ensure the scoring legend and letter distribution are visible on the sides.
  2. Prepare Letter Tiles: Place all 100 wooden letter tiles into the black drawstring bag. Shake the bag to mix the tiles thoroughly.
  3. Draw Starting Tiles: Each player draws one tile from the bag. The player who draws the letter closest to 'A' goes first. A blank tile is considered to be 'A'. Return these tiles to the bag and re-mix.
  4. Distribute Tile Racks: Each player takes one plastic tile rack.
  5. Draw Initial Hand: Each player then draws seven new tiles from the bag and places them on their tile rack, keeping them concealed from other players.

Game Objective

The goal of Scrabble is to score more points than your opponents by forming words on the gameboard using your letter tiles.

Playing a Word

  1. First Word: The first player places a word of two or more letters on the star in the center of the board. The word must read either horizontally or vertically.
  2. Subsequent Words: All words played after the first must connect to at least one existing letter on the board. Words can be extended, or new words can be formed by crossing existing words.
  3. Replenish Tiles: After playing a word, draw new tiles from the bag to replace the ones used, always maintaining seven tiles on your rack if possible.

Scoring

  • Letter Values: Each letter tile has a numerical value printed on it. This value is added to your score when the tile is used in a word.
  • Premium Squares:
    • Double Letter Score (Light Blue): The letter placed on this square is worth double its normal value.
    • Triple Letter Score (Dark Blue): The letter placed on this square is worth triple its normal value.
    • Double Word Score (Pink): The value of the entire word formed on this square is doubled.
    • Triple Word Score (Red): The value of the entire word formed on this square is tripled.
    • Star Square (Center): The first word played covers the star square, which acts as a Double Word Score.
  • Multiple Bonuses: If a word covers both a letter bonus and a word bonus, apply the letter bonus first, then the word bonus.
  • Bingo: If you use all seven of your tiles in a single turn, you receive a bonus of 50 points.

Keep a running score for each player using paper and a pencil.

Other Actions

  • Pass: A player may choose to pass their turn, scoring no points.
  • Exchange Tiles: Instead of playing a word, a player may exchange one or more tiles from their rack for new ones from the bag. This costs a turn and scores no points. This option is only available if there are at least seven tiles remaining in the bag.

Ending the Game

The game ends when:

  • All letters have been drawn and one player has used all the letters on their rack.
  • All possible plays have been made, or two consecutive turns have passed without a score.

The player with the highest total score wins. If a player has any tiles remaining on their rack at the end of the game, the sum of the values of those tiles is subtracted from their score.

Maintenance

  • Storage: Store all game components in the original box to prevent loss or damage. Keep the wooden tiles and gameboard away from excessive moisture or extreme temperatures to preserve their condition.
  • Cleaning:
    • Gameboard and Tile Racks: Wipe with a dry, soft cloth. For minor smudges, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by immediate drying.
    • Wooden Letter Tiles: Avoid using liquids. If necessary, gently wipe with a dry, soft cloth.

Troubleshooting

Missing Components:
If any components are missing upon opening the box, please contact Hasbro Gaming customer support for assistance. Refer to the "Components" section to verify all parts.
Tile Racks are Plastic, not Wood:
This version of the Scrabble game (Model A8166) includes durable plastic tile racks. While some older versions featured wooden racks, the plastic racks are designed for functionality and longevity. The letter tiles themselves are wooden.
Unclear Rules:
Review the "Operating: How to Play Scrabble" section carefully. For further clarification, many online resources and official Scrabble communities can provide additional guidance on specific rule interpretations.
