JBL CSMA180

JBL Professional CSMA180 Commercial Series 80-Watt Powered Audio Mixer/Amplifier

User Manual

1. Introduction

The JBL CSMA series of Mixer-Amplifiers are professional tools designed for commercial sound applications. This series features a sleek industrial design and utilizes Crown’s Drive Core technology, resulting in reduced size and weight, high efficiency, fanless operation, and a compact 1U rack space height. The CSMA180 model is an 80-Watt single-channel amplifier with four mixer input channels.

The mixer/amplifiers offer ease of use with a clean front panel that includes individual volume controls for each channel, a master volume adjustment, adjustable bass and treble controls, and a power switch. Illuminated rings around the volume controls enhance visibility in low-light environments. This amplifier supports 8 ohm and 4 ohm loads, and can be integrated into 70V and 100V distributed audio systems without requiring a separate transformer.

Inputs include balanced mic/line, unbalanced RCA, and speaker connections. RJ45 connectors are provided for use with JBL CSR-V in-wall volume controls. A universal power supply allows operation with AC voltages from 100 to 240 VAC, 50/60Hz. JBL Commercial mixer/amps are manufactured under HARMAN’s Green Edge environmental initiative, adhering to lead-free RoHS standards and utilizing recycled materials and energy-saving manufacturing processes. The Drive Core design significantly reduces power consumption, offering up to 80 percent more efficiency than previous designs.

4. Setup

Follow these steps to set up your JBL CSMA180 Mixer/Amplifier.

4.1 Physical Installation

  • The CSMA180 is designed for 1U rack mounting. Use the included rack mounting kit to secure the unit in a standard 19-inch equipment rack.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit. Do not obstruct the air vents.

4.2 Connecting Power

  • Connect the supplied AC power cord to the power inlet on the rear panel of the CSMA180.
  • Plug the other end of the power cord into a suitable AC power outlet (100-240 VAC, 50/60Hz).
  • Ensure the power switch on the front panel is in the OFF position before connecting to power.

4.3 Connecting Inputs

The CSMA180 features four input channels (CH1-CH4) with various connection options:

  • Mic/Line Inputs (Euro-block): Use the provided Euro-block connectors for balanced microphone or line-level sources. Ensure correct polarity.
  • RCA Inputs: Unbalanced RCA inputs are available for consumer-level audio devices.
  • Phantom Power: If using condenser microphones, activate phantom power via the switch on the rear panel for the respective channel.
  • Priority Input: Channel 1 (CH1) has a priority muting feature, allowing it to duck other channels when active.

4.4 Connecting Outputs

The amplifier output (AMP OUT) supports various speaker configurations:

  • Low Impedance Speakers: Connect 8 ohm or 4 ohm speakers to the corresponding terminals using appropriate speaker wire.
  • Distributed Audio Systems (70V/100V): For constant voltage systems, connect to the 70V or 100V terminals. No external transformer is required.
  • Auxiliary Output (AUX OUT): An auxiliary output is available for connecting to external recording devices or additional amplifiers.

4.5 Remote Volume Control

  • Connect a JBL CSR-V in-wall volume control module to the RJ45 port labeled 'CSP-V ONLY' on the rear panel using a standard Ethernet cable. This allows for remote master volume adjustment.

5. Operating Instructions

This section details the basic operation of the CSMA180.

5.1 Power On/Off

  • Press the power switch on the front panel to turn the unit ON or OFF.
  • Allow a few seconds for the unit to initialize after powering on.

5.2 Volume Controls

  • Input Channel Volume: Adjust the individual rotary knobs on the front panel to set the volume level for each input channel (CH1-CH4).
  • Master Volume: Use the larger master volume knob to control the overall output level of the amplifier.

5.3 Tone Controls

  • Bass Control: Adjust the bass knob to increase or decrease low-frequency response.
  • Treble Control: Adjust the treble knob to increase or decrease high-frequency response.

5.4 Priority Muting and VOX Ducking

  • The CSMA180 features priority muting on Channel 1 (CH1). When an audio signal is detected on CH1, it can automatically reduce the volume of other active input channels.
  • VOX ducking sensitivity can be adjusted via the control on the rear panel.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your CSMA180.

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the unit. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
