1. Introduction

The TEC TC-450 is a versatile mobile phono preamplifier designed to enhance the audio signal from your turntable, making it compatible with standard audio inputs on amplifiers or receivers. This unit features both battery and AC power options, offering flexibility for various listening environments. Its robust metal construction ensures durability and effective noise rejection.

2. Safety Information

  • Do not expose the unit to moisture or extreme temperatures.
  • Ensure proper ventilation around the unit.
  • Use only the specified power adapter (if applicable) or a fresh 9V battery.
  • Disconnect power before cleaning or servicing.

5. Setup

5.1 Powering the Unit

The TC-450 can be powered by either a 9-volt battery or the included AC adaptor.

  • Battery Power: To install a 9-volt battery (not included), carefully remove the two screws on the bottom panel to access the battery compartment. Insert a fresh 9-volt battery, ensuring correct polarity. Replace the panel and screws. A single 9-volt battery provides many hours of operation due to the preamp's low current draw.
  • AC Power: Connect the included 1A SMPS AC adaptor to the DC12V input jack on the rear of the unit. Plug the adaptor into a standard wall outlet.

5.2 Connecting Your Audio System

Follow these steps to connect your turntable to your amplifier or receiver:

  1. Connect your turntable's RCA output cables to the INPUT Phono (MM) jacks (red for right, white for left) on the rear of the TC-450.
  2. Connect the ground wire from your turntable to the Ground terminal on the TC-450.
  3. Using the supplied RCA cable, connect the OUTPUT Amp/Receiver jacks (red for right, white for left) on the TC-450 to an available auxiliary (AUX) input on your amplifier or receiver.
  4. If your amplifier/receiver has a miniplug input, use the supplied miniplug adaptor with the RCA cable to connect the TC-450's output.

6. Operating Instructions

Once all connections are secure and the unit is powered:

  1. Flip the power switch on the front panel to the ON position.
  2. Select the corresponding auxiliary input on your amplifier or receiver.
  3. Begin playing your vinyl record. Adjust the volume on your amplifier/receiver as desired.

Note: The TC-450 does not feature a power indicator light.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the unit. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
  • Battery Replacement: If using battery power and audio quality degrades or the unit stops functioning, replace the 9-volt battery as described in Section 5.1.
  • Storage: When not in use for extended periods, disconnect the AC adaptor or remove the battery. Store the unit in a cool, dry place.

8. Troubleshooting

  • No Sound:
    • Ensure the power switch is ON.
    • Check all RCA cable connections for proper seating and correct input/output.
    • Verify the amplifier/receiver is set to the correct input source.
    • If using battery power, replace the 9-volt battery. If using AC power, check the adaptor connection and wall outlet.
    • Ensure your turntable is functioning correctly.
  • Humming or Buzzing Noise:
    • Ensure the turntable's ground wire is securely connected to the TC-450's ground terminal.
    • Check for loose cable connections.
    • Move the preamp away from other electronic devices that may cause interference.
  • Distorted Sound:
    • Check that your turntable's cartridge is a Moving Magnet (MM) type, as this preamp is designed for MM cartridges.
    • Ensure volume levels on your amplifier/receiver are not excessively high, causing clipping.
