1. Introduction

5. Setup

5.1 Inserting the Battery

  1. Open the battery/memory card cover located on the bottom of the camera.
  2. Insert the NP-BN battery with the correct orientation, ensuring the contacts align.
  3. Close the cover securely.

5.2 Charging the Battery

  1. Connect the Multi USB cable to the camera's USB port.
  2. Connect the other end of the USB cable to the AC Adaptor AC-UB10C.
  3. Plug the AC Adaptor into a wall outlet. The charge lamp will illuminate during charging.
  4. Charging is complete when the charge lamp turns off. The camera also supports USB charging directly from a computer.

5.3 Inserting a Memory Card

  1. Open the battery/memory card cover.
  2. Insert a compatible memory card (SD/SDHC/SDXC or Memory Stick Duo/Pro Duo/Pro-HG Duo) into the slot until it clicks into place. Ensure the correct orientation.
  3. Close the cover securely.

5.4 Initial Settings (Date/Time)

Upon first power-on or after the battery has been removed for an extended period, you may need to set the date, time, and language. Follow the on-screen prompts to configure these settings.

6. Operating the Camera

6.1 Power On/Off

Press the ON/OFF button located on the top of the camera to power it on or off.

6.2 Taking Photos

The DSCW800 offers various modes for capturing still images:

  • Intelligent Auto: The camera automatically detects the scene and adjusts settings for optimal results.
  • Easy Mode: Simplifies the menu and settings for basic point-and-shoot operation.
  • Scene Selection (SCN): Choose from various preset scene modes to optimize settings for specific conditions, including High-sensitivity, Night Scene, Night Portrait, Landscape, Portrait, Beach, Snow, Gourmet, and Pet.
  • Panorama Shot: Capture wide panoramic images by panning the camera across the scene.
  • SteadyShot: Reduces blur in photos, especially in low light or when zooming.

6.3 Recording Videos

To record video, press the dedicated MOVIE button. The camera records in 720p HD (1280x720) at 30 frames per second. You can use the optical zoom during video recording.

6.4 Using the Flash

The built-in flash can be activated in various modes to provide additional illumination in dark environments. Flash modes include Advanced Flash, Auto, Flash On, Off, and Slow Sync. Access flash settings via the menu.

6.5 Exposure Compensation

Adjust the exposure compensation (EV) from -2 to +2 in 1/3-stop increments to make your photos darker or lighter than the camera's automatic exposure setting.

6.6 Autofocus Modes

The camera features several autofocus modes:

  • Multi-point AF: Focuses on multiple points in the frame.
  • Center-weighted AF: Prioritizes focus on the center of the frame.
  • Tracking Focus: Maintains focus on a moving subject.
  • Face Tracking Focus: Detects and focuses on human faces.

6.7 Self-Timer

The self-timer function allows you to delay the shutter release. Options include 10 seconds, 2 seconds, and self-portrait modes for one or two people, which automatically trigger the shutter after detecting faces.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning the Camera

  • Lens: Use a soft, dry cloth or a lens brush to gently remove dust. For stubborn smudges, use a lens cleaning solution on a microfiber cloth.
  • LCD Screen: Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid pressing hard on the screen.
  • Camera Body: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe away dust and fingerprints. Do not use harsh chemicals.

7.2 Storage

When not in use, store the camera in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Remove the battery if the camera will not be used for an extended period.

  • Camera does not turn on: Ensure the battery is fully charged and correctly inserted.
  • Images are blurry: Check if SteadyShot is enabled. Ensure proper focus by half-pressing the shutter button before fully pressing. Clean the lens if smudged.
  • Battery drains quickly: Reduce screen brightness. Turn off the camera when not in use.
  • Memory card error: Ensure the memory card is correctly inserted and not damaged. Try formatting the card (this will erase all data).
