Operating Instructions

Voltage Measurement and Polarity

The Power Probe III can detect electrical circuits from 0 to 70 volts with a 1/10 volt accuracy. The digital display provides an instant voltage reading, and a polarity indication (positive or negative) is shown to ensure correct circuit identification.

Illuminating Test Area

For convenience in low-light conditions, the Power Probe III features dual headlights that illuminate the test area, ensuring clear visibility during operation.

Continuity Testing

Perform fast and simple continuity testing using the Power Probe III's auxiliary ground lead. This feature allows for quick verification of circuit integrity.

Powering Components

The tool allows you to power up components directly, either in your hand or on the vehicle. This is useful for testing various electrical components such as cooling fans, wiper motors, fuel pumps, horns, and starter solenoids.

Short Circuit Protection

The Power Probe III is equipped with internal protection against short circuits. If a short circuit occurs, the circuit breaker will trip. Simply allow it to cool and press the reset button to resume operation.

Testing Bad Grounds

Common problems like bad ground circuits can be quickly identified. By pressing the power switch rearward, the Power Probe's tip is grounded, allowing you to supply the circuit with a good ground to test its functionality.

Audio Testing

For audio installers, the Power Probe III allows you to probe an active audio channel and listen to the signal through its built-in speaker.

Distributor Pickup Circuits & Min/Max Reading

Listen to distributor pickup circuits and observe the Min/Max readings on the display to verify their operation.

Charging System Check

To check the charging system, with the engine running, press the power switch forward and read the instant voltage display.

Min/Max Voltage Capture

In positive peak mode, the Power Probe III captures and holds the maximum voltage of a circuit on the display until reset. In negative peak mode, it monitors and captures the minimum voltage, useful for identifying voltage drop or loss.

Extended Reach

The 20-foot power lead extension allows you to reach all around the vehicle, providing flexibility and convenience during diagnostic tasks.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Power Probe III, keep the tool clean and free from dirt, grease, and moisture. Store it in its original clamshell packaging or a suitable protective case when not in use. Regularly inspect the power lead and clips for any signs of wear or damage. Do not attempt to open the tool's casing, as this may void the warranty and could damage internal components.

Troubleshooting

If the Power Probe III is not functioning as expected, first ensure it is properly connected to a 12-24 VDC power source. Check the circuit breaker for any trips and reset if necessary. Verify that the probe tip is making good contact with the circuit being tested. If issues persist, refer to the instructional DVD or contact customer support.
