4. Setup

4.1 Initial Power-Up

Connect the AC Power Adapter to the scanner and a power outlet. Ensure the included MicroSD card is properly inserted. The scanner will perform an initial boot-up sequence.

4.2 Antenna Connection

Attach the telescoping antenna to the antenna connector on the top of the scanner. For optimal reception, position the antenna vertically and away from obstructions.

4.3 MicroSD Card

The MicroSD card comes pre-installed with the scanner's database and firmware. Do not remove it during operation. It is essential for storing system data, recordings, and updates.

4.4 Wi-Fi Dongle (Optional)

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Keypad and Controls Overview

  • Scroll Control/Function Knob: Used for navigation and selection. Press to confirm, rotate to scroll.
  • Keypad (0-9, ZIP, SRCH, SERV, ATT, WX, IFX, REV, DISP): Numeric input and direct access to various functions.
  • SQ (Squelch) Knob: Adjusts the squelch level to filter out weak signals and background noise.
  • VOL (Volume)/Backlight Knob: Controls audio volume and adjusts LCD backlight intensity.

  • REPLAY Button: Accesses the Instant Replay feature.

5.2 Basic Scanning (Location-Based)

The BCD536HP simplifies scanning by allowing you to enter your zip code. The scanner will then load and monitor frequencies relevant to your geographical area from its extensive database.

  1. Press the ZIP button.
  2. Select your country (USA or Canada).
  3. Enter your 5-digit zip code using the keypad.
  4. Confirm the entry. The scanner will automatically load and begin scanning relevant channels.

5.3 Managing Favorites Lists

You can create and manage custom Favorites Lists for specific systems or departments. Use the Sentinel PC Software for advanced management, or directly on the scanner:

  2. Navigate to 'Manage Favorites'.
  3. Select a Favorites List to activate or deactivate it for scanning.

5.4 Close Call RF Capture

This feature detects and tunes to strong local signals instantly. To activate:

  1. Press the MENU button.
  2. Navigate to 'Srch/CloCall Opt'.

5.5 Instant Replay and Audio Recording

The scanner continuously buffers audio. Press the REPLAY button to listen to the last few minutes of transmissions. For longer recordings, ensure the MicroSD card has sufficient space and enable audio recording in the menu settings.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Firmware and Database Updates

  • Confirm longitude and latitude are N and W (for North America).

7.2 Scanning Interrupted

  • Turn off Priority Scan or change Priority Interval.
  • Turn off Close Call Priority.
  • Turn off Weather Priority.
  • Set Channel Delay longer.
  • Set positive Channel Delay.

7.3 All Channels Out of Range

  • Increase your range settings.
  • Turn Location Control off for the Favorites List.
