1. Safety Information

The BLACK+DECKER LST400 12-Inch 20V MAX Lithium High Performance Trimmer and Edger is designed for efficient lawn care. It features Runtime Extension Technology with a dual mode accelerator switch, allowing users to choose between high performance for tough jobs and extended runtime for longer use, up to a full hour. The patented Power Drive Transmission helps prevent bogging down in heavy grass and weeds, while the Automatic Feed Spool ensures continuous operation without manual adjustment. This unit also includes a wheeled edging feature for precise edging.

3. Setup

3.1 Unpacking and Assembly

1. Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Ensure all included items are present: LST400 20V MAX Cordless Trimmer/Edger, LB2X4020-OPE 20V MAX 2X Battery, LCS1620 Charger, AF-100 Spool, Guard, and Handle.
2. Attach the Guard: Align the guard with the slots on the trimmer head. Push firmly until it clicks into place. Ensure it is securely fastened before use.
3. Install the Auxiliary Handle: Slide the auxiliary handle onto the shaft. Adjust its position for comfortable operation and tighten the locking mechanism.

3.2 Charging the Battery

1. Insert the 20V MAX Lithium-Ion battery into the charger.
2. Plug the charger into a standard electrical outlet. The charger indicator light will show the charging status.
3. Allow the battery to charge fully before first use. Refer to the charger's instructions for specific charging times.

3.3 Installing the Battery

1. Ensure the trimmer is turned off.
2. Slide the charged battery pack into the battery port on the trimmer handle until it clicks securely into place.
3. To remove the battery, press the release button and slide the battery out.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Adjusting the Trimmer

• Adjusting Shaft Length: Loosen the collar on the shaft and extend or retract the shaft to a comfortable operating length. Tighten the collar to secure.
• Adjusting Handle Position: Loosen the auxiliary handle clamp and pivot the handle to your desired angle for optimal balance and control. Tighten the clamp.

4.2 Trimming

Before starting, ensure the area is clear of debris, rocks, and other objects that could be thrown by the cutting line.

1. Hold the trimmer firmly with both hands.
2. Select the desired power mode using the dual mode switch:
   • Mode 1 (Runtime): For lighter trimming tasks and extended battery life.
   • Mode 2 (Power): For tougher weeds and thicker grass, providing higher cutting performance.
3. Press the trigger to start the trimmer.
4. Swing the trimmer from side to side, keeping the cutting head parallel to the ground. Avoid hitting hard surfaces to prolong line life.

4.3 Edging

The LST400 can be easily converted from a trimmer to an edger using its wheeled edging feature.

1. Turn off the trimmer and remove the battery for safety.
2. Rotate the trimmer head 90 degrees until it locks into the edging position. The integrated wheel should now be positioned to guide the trimmer along hard surfaces.
3. Reinsert the battery.
4. Hold the trimmer with the wheel resting on the hard surface (e.g., driveway, sidewalk) and the cutting line positioned over the edge of the grass.
5. Press the trigger to start and guide the trimmer along the edge, allowing the wheel to maintain a consistent cutting depth.

4.4 Automatic Line Feed

The Automatic Feed Spool (AFS) system automatically feeds cutting line as needed. There is no need to bump the head or manually adjust the line during operation.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

• Always remove the battery before cleaning or performing any maintenance.
• Clean the trimmer housing and guard with a damp cloth. Do not use strong detergents or solvents.
• Remove any grass clippings or debris from the cutting head and air vents to ensure proper operation and prevent overheating.

5.2 Replacing the Cutting Line

When the cutting line runs out, replace it with a BLACK+DECKER AF-100 spool or equivalent 0.065-inch diameter monofilament line.

1. Ensure the trimmer is off and the battery is removed.
2. Press the tabs on the spool cap and remove the cap and the old spool.
3. Insert the new pre-wound spool, ensuring the line is threaded through the eyelet on the spool cap.
4. Snap the spool cap back into place.
