Samlex PST-300-12 Pure Sine Wave Inverter User Manual

Model: PST-300-12 | Brand: Samlex America

1. Product Overview

The Samlex PST-300-12 is a high-efficiency DC-AC inverter designed to convert 12 Volts DC to 300 Watts of pure sine-wave AC power at 120 Volts, 60 Hz. This unit is suitable for powering sensitive electronics and appliances. Key features include overload protection, a low battery alarm and automatic shutdown, and a low idle power draw of less than 0.5 Amps. AC power is supplied through a NEMA-20R GFCI duplex outlet located on the front panel. The inverter is safety certified to UL standards.

2. Safety Information

Read all instructions and cautionary markings on the inverter, the batteries, and all appropriate sections of this manual before use. Improper installation or use may result in electric shock, fire, or serious injury.

  • Electrical Shock Hazard: The inverter generates AC power, which can be lethal. Do not open the inverter casing. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
  • Fire Hazard: Do not operate the inverter near flammable materials, gases, or vapors. Ensure adequate ventilation.
  • Battery Safety: Work in a well-ventilated area when working with batteries. Batteries can produce explosive gases. Wear eye protection.
  • Grounding: Ensure the inverter is properly grounded according to local and national electrical codes.
  • Ventilation: Do not block the ventilation openings. Ensure at least 6 inches of clear space around the inverter for proper airflow.
  • Moisture: Do not expose the inverter to rain, water, or excessive moisture.
  • Children: Keep the inverter out of reach of children.

3. Package Contents

Verify that all items listed below are included in your package:

  • Samlex PST-300-12 Pure Sine Wave Inverter
  • Detachable cable with 12V plug adaptor
  • Cable with battery clamps
  • User Manual (this document)

4. Setup and Installation

4.1 Choosing a Location

Select a location that is:

  • Dry and protected from moisture.
  • Well-ventilated, with at least 6 inches of clearance around the inverter.
  • Away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
  • Secure and stable to prevent accidental movement.

4.2 DC Input Connection

The inverter can be connected to a 12V DC power source using one of two methods:

  1. Using the 12V Plug Adaptor: For loads up to approximately 150 Watts, connect the detachable cable with the 12V plug adaptor to a standard 12V accessory socket in a vehicle or other compatible power source. Ensure the connection is secure.
  2. Using Battery Clamps: For higher loads up to 300 Watts, use the provided cable with battery clamps.
    • Connect the red (+) clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the 12V battery.
    • Connect the black (-) clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the 12V battery.
    • Ensure connections are tight and secure to prevent voltage drop and overheating.

Caution: Always connect the inverter to the battery before turning on the inverter or connecting AC loads. Reverse polarity connection will damage the inverter and void the warranty.

4.3 Grounding

For safety, the inverter chassis should be properly grounded. Connect a suitable grounding wire from the inverter's grounding terminal to a reliable earth ground or vehicle chassis ground.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Powering On the Inverter

  1. Ensure the DC input connections are secure.
  2. Press the power button on the inverter. The power indicator light should illuminate, indicating the inverter is operational.

5.2 Connecting AC Devices

Plug your AC devices into the NEMA-20R GFCI duplex outlet on the front panel of the inverter. Ensure the total wattage of all connected devices does not exceed 300 Watts. The pure sine wave output is suitable for sensitive electronics.

5.3 Important Operating Notes

  • Overload Protection: If the total load exceeds 300 Watts, the inverter will automatically shut down to prevent damage. Reduce the load and restart the inverter.
  • Low Battery Alarm/Shutdown: The inverter will emit an audible alarm when the input DC voltage drops to a low level. If the voltage continues to drop, the inverter will shut down to protect the battery from deep discharge. Recharge or replace the battery.
  • Low Idle Power Draw: The inverter has a low idle power draw of less than 0.5 Amps, conserving battery power when no AC load is connected.
  • GFCI Outlet: The Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlet provides additional safety by detecting ground faults and quickly shutting off power. If the GFCI trips, press the "RESET" button to restore power.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your inverter.

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean the exterior of the inverter with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents. Ensure ventilation openings are free from dust and debris.
  • Connections: Regularly check all DC input connections (battery clamps or 12V plug adaptor) for tightness and corrosion. Loose connections can cause overheating and poor performance.
  • Storage: When not in use for extended periods, store the inverter in a cool, dry place, disconnected from the power source.

7. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No AC output, inverter not turning on.No DC input power; Loose DC connections; Blown fuse in 12V plug adaptor; Inverter fault.Check battery voltage; Ensure DC connections are tight; Replace fuse if applicable; Contact customer support if fault persists.
Inverter shuts down during operation.Overload; Low battery voltage; Over-temperature.Reduce AC load; Recharge or replace battery; Ensure adequate ventilation.
Low battery alarm sounds.Input DC voltage is low.Recharge or replace the 12V battery.
GFCI outlet trips.Ground fault detected in connected appliance or wiring.Disconnect all AC loads, press "RESET". If it trips again, check individual appliances for faults.
