- Autofocus (AF): Press the shutter button halfway to activate autofocus.
- Focus Modes: Select between Single-Servo AF (AF-S) for stationary subjects or Continuous-Servo AF (AF-C) for moving subjects.
- Manual Focus (MF): Switch the lens or camera to MF mode and rotate the focus ring on the lens.
2.3. Exposure Control
Exposure can be controlled automatically or manually.
- ISO Sensitivity: Adjustable from 100 to 51200. Higher ISO values allow shooting in darker conditions but may introduce more noise.
- Shutter Speed: Ranges from 1/8000 seconds to 0.000125 seconds (bulb mode for longer exposures).
- Aperture: Controlled via the lens, typically F2.8-F16.
2.4. Continuous Shooting
The K-3 can capture images at approximately 8.3 frames per second (fps). This is ideal for capturing fast-moving subjects.
2.5. Image Stabilization (Shake Reduction)
The camera features in-body Sensor-Shift Shake Reduction (SR) with rotational compensation. This system stabilizes any K-mount lens attached to the camera, reducing blur caused by camera shake.
2.6. Anti-Aliasing Filter Simulator
The K-3 includes a selectable anti-aliasing filter. This feature can be turned on to suppress moiré patterns or turned off to achieve maximum sharpness and resolution. Access this setting through the camera's menu.
2.7. Video Recording
The camera supports Full HD 1080i/p video recording in AVC format.
- Microphone: Features a built-in monaural microphone. An external stereo microphone can be connected for improved audio quality.
- Audio Level: Recording sound levels are adjustable via the camera menu.
2.8. Using the LCD Screen and Viewfinder

2.10. Self-Timer
A 12-second self-timer function is available for delayed shutter release.
2.11. Connecting to External Devices
The K-3 can connect to computers and external storage devices via its USB 2.0 port. It also has a video out port.
3. Maintenance
3.1. Cleaning the Camera Body and Lens
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the camera body. For stubborn dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water.
- For lenses, use a lens brush to remove dust, followed by a lens cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth.
- Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
3.2. Sensor Cleaning
Dust on the image sensor can appear as spots in your photos. The K-3 has a sensor-shift mechanism that can be used for dust removal. Refer to the camera's menu for the sensor cleaning function. For persistent dust, professional cleaning is recommended.
3.3. Battery Care
- Store batteries in a cool, dry place when not in use.
- Avoid fully discharging the battery frequently to prolong its lifespan.
- Use only genuine Pentax or compatible Lithium Ion batteries.
3.4. Storage
When storing the camera for extended periods, remove the battery and memory card. Store the camera in a dry, dust-free environment, preferably with a desiccant to prevent mold and mildew.
4. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter.
4.1. Camera Does Not Power On
- Ensure the battery is fully charged and correctly inserted.
- Check if the battery contacts are clean.
- Try using a different, fully charged battery if available.
4.2. Images Are Blurry
- Verify that the lens is properly attached and clean.
- Check your focus mode and ensure the camera is focusing correctly on your subject.
- If shooting in low light, increase ISO, use a wider aperture, or use a tripod to prevent camera shake. Ensure Shake Reduction is enabled.
- Check shutter speed; a faster shutter speed can prevent motion blur.
4.3. Memory Card Error
- Ensure the memory card is inserted correctly.
- Try reformatting the card in the camera (note: this will erase all data).
- Test with a different, compatible SD/SDHC card.
4.4. Flash Not Firing
- Check the flash mode settings. Ensure it's not set to "Off" or a mode that prevents firing.
- Ensure the flash is popped up if using the built-in flash.
- Verify battery level; low battery can prevent flash operation.
