Setup

  1. 1. Unpacking and Placement:

    • Carefully remove all packaging materials. Retain packaging for future transport or storage.
    • Place the machine on a stable, level, and heat-resistant surface, away from water sources and heat. Ensure adequate ventilation around the machine.
  2. 2. Initial Cleaning:

    • Wash the water reservoir, portafilter, filter baskets, and drip tray with warm water and a mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
    • Wipe the exterior of the machine with a damp cloth.
  3. 3. Filling the Water Reservoir:

    • Remove the water reservoir from the back of the machine.
    • Fill the reservoir with fresh, cold drinking water up to the MAX level indicator. Do not use distilled or demineralized water.
    • Place the reservoir back into its position, ensuring it is seated correctly.
  4. 4. Priming the Machine (First Use):

    • Plug the machine into a grounded electrical outlet.
    • Place a container under the steam wand.
    • Turn on the machine using the main power switch. The indicator lights will illuminate.
    • Once the machine reaches operating temperature (indicator light solid), open the steam knob to dispense water through the steam wand until a steady stream flows. Close the steam knob. This primes the pump.
    • Place a container under the brew group. Press the brew button to dispense water through the brew group until a steady stream flows. Press the brew button again to stop.

Operating Instructions

Brewing Espresso

  1. 1. Prepare the Portafilter:

    • Insert the desired filter basket (single or double shot) into the portafilter.
    • Add freshly ground espresso coffee to the basket. For a single shot, use approximately 7 grams; for a double, use 14 grams.
    • Distribute the coffee evenly and tamp firmly with a tamper. Wipe any excess grounds from the rim of the portafilter.
  2. 2. Insert Portafilter:

    • Align the portafilter with the brew group and insert it. Turn the handle firmly to the right until it is securely locked.
  3. 3. Place Cups:

    • Place pre-warmed espresso cups under the portafilter spouts.
  4. 4. Brew Espresso:

    • Ensure the machine is at brewing temperature (indicator light solid).
    • Press the brew button. Espresso will begin to flow.
    • Press the brew button again to stop the flow once the desired volume is reached (typically 25-30ml for a single shot, 50-60ml for a double).
  5. 5. Remove Portafilter:

    • Carefully turn the portafilter handle to the left to unlock and remove it.
    • Discard the used coffee grounds (puck) and rinse the portafilter.

Steaming Milk (Using the Turbo Frother)

  1. 1. Prepare for Steam:

    • Ensure the water reservoir is adequately filled.
    • Press the steam button on the control panel. The indicator light will blink and then become solid when the machine reaches steaming temperature.
  2. 2. Purge Steam Wand:

    • Place an empty container under the steam wand.
    • Open the steam knob briefly to release any condensed water. Close the knob.
  3. 3. Steam Milk:

    • Fill a stainless steel pitcher with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy) up to just below the spout.
    • Submerge the tip of the Turbo Frother just below the surface of the milk.
    • Open the steam knob fully. Lower the pitcher slightly to introduce air for frothing, then raise it to submerge the tip deeper for heating.
    • Continue steaming until the milk reaches desired temperature and texture. The pitcher will become hot to the touch.
    • Close the steam knob and remove the pitcher.
  4. 4. Clean Steam Wand:

    • Immediately wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth to remove any milk residue.
    • Briefly open the steam knob again to purge any milk from inside the wand, then close it.

Descaling

Descaling is crucial for maintaining machine performance and longevity. The frequency depends on your water hardness. Gaggia recommends descaling every 2-3 months with Gaggia descaling solution.

  1. Prepare the descaling solution according to the product instructions and pour it into the water reservoir.
  2. Place a large container under the brew group and steam wand.
  3. Run approximately half of the solution through the brew group by pressing the brew button.
  4. Run the remaining solution through the steam wand by opening the steam knob.
  5. Rinse the reservoir thoroughly and fill with fresh water. Repeat the process of running water through the brew group and steam wand to rinse the machine.

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
No water flow from brew group or steam wand. Empty water reservoir; machine not primed; pump airlocked; scale buildup. Fill reservoir; prime the machine; descale if necessary.
Espresso flows too slowly or not at all. Coffee ground too fine; too much coffee in basket; tamped too hard; clogged filter. Use coarser grind; reduce coffee dose; tamp lighter; clean filter basket.
Espresso flows too quickly, weak taste. Coffee ground too coarse; too little coffee in basket; tamped too lightly. Use finer grind; increase coffee dose; tamp firmer.
No steam from steam wand. Machine not at steaming temperature; steam wand clogged; scale buildup. Wait for steam light to be solid; clean steam wand; descale.
