1. Introduction

The Retevis RT45 Walkie Talkies are designed for reliable, license-free communication, ideal for adults in various outdoor activities such as camping and hiking. These FRS radios feature a long range, rechargeable batteries, NOAA weather alerts, a built-in flashlight, and an SOS function, ensuring you stay connected and informed.

2. What's in the Box

Your Retevis RT45 package includes the following items:

3. Setup

3.1. Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the walkie talkie.
  2. Open the battery compartment cover.
  3. Insert the 3 AA NIMH batteries into each walkie talkie, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

3.2. Charging the Radios

The RT45 walkie talkies come with a 2-in-1 USB charging cable, allowing both units to be charged simultaneously. You can use the included adapter or any standard USB power source (like a computer's USB port or a phone charger).

  1. Connect the 2-in-1 USB charging cable to the micro USB port on each walkie talkie.
  2. Plug the USB end of the cable into the provided adapter or a compatible USB power source.
  3. The battery indicator on the LCD screen will show charging status.

3.3. Attaching the Belt Clip

To attach the belt clip, align it with the slot on the back of the walkie talkie and slide it down until it clicks into place.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1. Power On/Off

Press and hold the MENU button for approximately 3 seconds to power the unit on or off.

4.2. Volume Adjustment

Upon powering on, the display shows the current volume level. Use the UP () and DOWN () buttons to adjust the volume from level 0 to 8.

4.3. Channel Selection

The RT45 features 22 FRS channels. To change channels:

  1. Press the MENU button once. The channel number will flash.
  2. Use the UP () or DOWN () buttons to select your desired channel.
  3. Press the PTT button to confirm and exit, or MENU again to move to privacy code settings.

4.4. Privacy Codes (CTCSS/DCS)

The radios support 38 CTCSS codes and 83 DCS codes (121 privacy codes total) to minimize interference from other users. To set a privacy code:

  1. Press the MENU button twice (after channel selection). The privacy code will flash.
  2. Use the UP () or DOWN () buttons to select your desired code.
  3. Press the PTT button to confirm and exit, or MENU again to move to other settings.

4.5. Push-to-Talk (PTT)

To transmit, press and hold the PTT button located on the side of the radio. Speak clearly into the microphone. Release the PTT button to listen.

4.6. VOX (Voice Activated Transmission)

VOX allows for hands-free operation. When activated, the radio transmits automatically when it detects your voice. There are 5 sensitivity levels.

  1. Press the MENU button until 'VOX' appears on the display.
  2. Use the UP () or DOWN () buttons to select a sensitivity level (1-5) or 'OF' to turn off VOX.
  3. Press PTT to confirm.

4.7. NOAA Weather Alert

The RT45 includes 11 NOAA alert channels to keep you informed of severe weather conditions.

4.8. Flashlight Operation

The built-in flashlight is located at the top of the radio. Press the dedicated flashlight button on the side to turn it on or off.

4.9. Keypad Lock

To prevent accidental changes to settings, press and hold the LOCK button (key icon) until the lock icon appears on the display. Repeat to unlock.

4.10. Call Tone Alerts

The RT45 offers 10 selectable call tone alerts. To send a call tone, quickly press the CALL button (music note icon).

4.11. Dual Watch Function

This feature allows the radio to monitor two channels simultaneously. Consult the user manual for detailed activation steps.

4.12. Room Monitor

The room monitor function allows you to use one radio to monitor sounds in a room, transmitting them to another radio. This can be useful as a basic baby monitor.

5. Maintenance

5.1. Battery Care

  • Always use the provided rechargeable batteries or high-quality AA NIMH batteries.
  • Do not mix old and new batteries, or different types of batteries.
  • Remove batteries if the radio will not be used for an extended period.

5.2. Cleaning

Wipe the radio with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Ensure the USB port cover is closed to prevent dust and moisture ingress.

5.3. Storage

Store the radios in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

6. Troubleshooting

  • No Power: Ensure batteries are correctly installed and charged. Check for low battery alert.
  • Poor Range/Static: Verify both radios are on the same channel and privacy code. Ensure no large obstructions (buildings, hills) are between units. Move to an open area.
  • Cannot Transmit/Receive: Check if the keypad lock is active. Ensure the PTT button is fully pressed when transmitting and released when receiving.
  • Battery Drains Quickly: Ensure you are using rechargeable NIMH batteries and they are fully charged. Consider replacing older batteries if capacity has diminished.
