Product Components

The Dante Universal Log Lighter Combo Kit includes the following components:

Dante Products NG.BVS.CR Universal Log Lighter Combo Kit components: a chrome key, a chrome floor plate, a long gas log lighter tube with a mixer, and a brass T-fitting.

Figure 1: Overview of the Dante Universal Log Lighter Combo Kit components. This image displays all parts included in the kit: a chrome-plated key for operating the valve, a circular chrome floor plate that covers the valve opening, a long metal tube which is the natural gas log lighter with an attached mixer at one end, and a brass T-fitting for gas line connection.

  • Natural Gas Log Lighter: A 20-inch long tube with an integrated air/gas mixing chamber, designed for efficient gas combustion.
  • Quarter-Turn Ball Valve: A straight 1/2-inch valve for controlling gas flow.
  • Chrome Floor Plate: A decorative zinc die-cast, chrome-plated plate to cover the valve opening.
  • 3-Inch Key: A zinc die-cast, chrome-plated key for operating the quarter-turn ball valve.
  • Brass T-Fitting: For connecting the gas supply line.

Setup and Installation

Important Safety Information: Installation must be performed by a qualified professional in accordance with all local codes and regulations. Ensure the main gas supply is turned off before beginning installation.

  1. Prepare Fireplace: Ensure the fireplace is clean and free of debris. Identify the location for the gas line connection.
  2. Connect Gas Line: Connect the natural gas supply line to the brass T-fitting. Use appropriate pipe sealant on all threaded connections to prevent leaks.
  3. Install Ball Valve: Attach the quarter-turn ball valve to the T-fitting. Ensure it is securely tightened.
  4. Position Log Lighter: Connect the natural gas log lighter tube to the ball valve. Position the log lighter within the fireplace, ensuring the burner holes face upwards and are clear of any obstructions. The log lighter measures 20 inches from end to end with the mixer attached.
  5. Install Floor Plate: Place the chrome floor plate over the valve stem opening in the hearth or floor, ensuring it sits flush.
  6. Test for Leaks: After all connections are made, slowly turn on the main gas supply. Apply a leak detection solution (soapy water) to all connections. Bubbles indicate a leak. If a leak is detected, turn off the gas supply immediately, tighten connections, and re-test. Do not proceed until all leaks are resolved.
  7. Place Gas Logs: Arrange your gas logs over the log lighter, ensuring they do not block the burner holes or the air/gas mixing chamber. Allow adequate air circulation around the log lighter.

Operating Instructions

Safety First: Always ensure proper ventilation when operating gas appliances. Never leave an active flame unattended.

  1. Open Damper: Ensure the fireplace damper is fully open before lighting to allow for proper ventilation and prevent smoke from entering the room. The log lighter heats the chimney quickly, causing the fireplace to draw smoke immediately up the chimney.
  2. Insert Key: Insert the 3-inch chrome key into the quarter-turn ball valve stem.
  3. Turn On Gas: Slowly turn the key to the "ON" position (typically a quarter-turn). You should hear the sound of gas flowing.
  4. Ignite Gas: Immediately use a long fireplace lighter or match to ignite the gas flowing from the log lighter. The flame should be visible and consistent.
  5. Adjust Flame: Once the logs are ignited, you can adjust the flame intensity by partially turning the key towards the "OFF" position. For full ignition of logs, allow the log lighter to burn for a few minutes until the logs are sufficiently lit.
  6. Turn Off Log Lighter: Once the gas logs are burning steadily, turn the key to the "OFF" position to extinguish the log lighter flame. Remove the key.

Maintenance

The Dante Universal Log Lighter Combo Kit requires minimal maintenance. Regular inspection is recommended to ensure safe and efficient operation.

  • Annual Inspection: Have a qualified professional inspect the gas connections and the log lighter annually for any signs of wear, corrosion, or leaks.
  • Clean Burner Holes: Periodically check the burner holes on the log lighter tube for any obstructions (e.g., soot, debris). Use a small brush or wire to clear them if necessary. Ensure the gas supply is off before cleaning.
  • Clean Components: Wipe down the chrome floor plate and key with a soft, damp cloth to maintain their appearance. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
