1. Introduction
The Hunter X-CORE Series Indoor Controller (model XC-400I) is designed for residential irrigation applications. This controller offers reliable and efficient management of your watering schedules. It is compatible with a Solar Sync ET sensor for automatic runtime adjustments based on local weather conditions, and also supports Hunter remotes for wireless irrigation activation. This manual provides essential information for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of your X-CORE controller.
2. Setup and Installation
2.1 Mounting the Controller
Select an indoor location for mounting the controller. Ensure the location is dry and protected from extreme temperatures. Use appropriate mounting hardware for your wall type.

Image: Front view of the Hunter X-CORE Series Indoor Controller (XC-400I). The display shows '8:03 AM'. The central dial has settings for 'System Off', 'Manual', 'Solar Sync', 'Seasonal Adjust', 'Date/Time', 'Start Times', 'Run Times', and 'Water Days'. Control buttons for navigation and programming are located above the dial.
2.2 Wiring Connections
Before making any electrical connections, ensure the power to the controller is disconnected. The X-CORE controller operates on 24VAC power. Connect the power transformer wires to the designated terminals. Connect the valve wires for each irrigation zone to the corresponding numbered terminals (1-8). A common wire (usually white) should be connected to the 'C' terminal. If using a rain sensor, connect it to the 'SENS' terminals.
- Disconnect power to the existing controller or ensure no power is supplied to the new installation point.
- Open the controller's wiring compartment.
- Carefully label each wire from your existing system (if replacing) before disconnecting. Note the zone number for each valve wire and the common wire.
- Connect the 24VAC power wires from the transformer to the '24VAC' terminals.
- Connect the common wire(s) to the 'C' terminal.
- Connect each zone valve wire to its corresponding numbered terminal (1-8).
- If using a rain sensor, connect its wires to the 'SENS' terminals.
- Securely close the wiring compartment.
- Restore power to the controller.
3. Operating Instructions
The X-CORE controller features a central dial for selecting functions and arrow buttons for adjusting settings. The LCD display provides clear feedback on current selections and programmed values.
3.1 Setting Date and Time
- Turn the dial to 'Date/Time'.
- Use the arrow buttons to adjust the year, month, day, hour, and minute.
- Press the '+' or '-' buttons to change values.
- Turn the dial to 'Run' to save settings.
3.2 Programming Watering Schedules
The controller allows for multiple independent programs (A, B, C) to manage different watering needs.
- Turn the dial to 'Start Times'. Select a program (A, B, or C) using the arrow buttons.
- Set up to four start times for each program. Use the arrow buttons to adjust the time and '+' or '-' buttons to change values.
- Turn the dial to 'Run Times'. Select a station (zone) and set its watering duration in minutes. Repeat for all desired stations within the program.
- Turn the dial to 'Water Days'. Select the days of the week for the program to run, or choose odd/even day watering.
- Turn the dial to 'Run' to save settings and activate the program.
3.3 Manual Operation

- Turn the dial to 'Manual'.
- Use the arrow buttons to select a specific station or 'All Stations'.
- Use the '+' or '-' buttons to set the desired watering duration.
- Turn the dial to 'Run' to start manual watering.
3.4 Seasonal Adjust
The 'Seasonal Adjust' feature allows you to globally increase or decrease watering durations for all programs by a percentage, adapting to changing weather conditions without reprogramming each station.
- Turn the dial to 'Seasonal Adjust'.
- Use the '+' or '-' buttons to adjust the percentage (e.g., 100% for normal, 50% for half, 150% for 1.5 times).
- Turn the dial to 'Run' to apply the adjustment.
4. Maintenance
The X-CORE controller is designed for minimal maintenance. Regularly check the wiring connections for any signs of wear or corrosion. Ensure the controller's housing is clean and free from debris. If a Solar Sync ET sensor is connected, ensure it is clear of obstructions for accurate weather data collection.
5. Troubleshooting
If the controller display is blank or unresponsive:
- Check the power supply to the controller. Ensure the 24VAC transformer is properly plugged into a working outlet.
- Verify the power transformer is functioning correctly by testing its output voltage (should be around 24-28VAC).
- If the display shows an error message, consult the specific error code in the full product manual (not provided here) or contact Hunter-Industries support.
If a zone is not watering:
- Check the wiring connection for that specific zone at the controller and at the valve.
- Ensure the watering schedule for that zone is active and correctly programmed.
- Verify the manual operation of the valve itself.
