The mode dial on the top of the camera allows selection of various shooting modes:

  • P (Programmed Auto): Camera sets shutter speed and aperture for optimal exposure.
  • S (Shutter-Priority Auto): User selects shutter speed, camera sets aperture.
  • A (Aperture-Priority Auto): User selects aperture, camera sets shutter speed.
  • M (Manual): User controls both shutter speed and aperture.
  • SCENE: Select from various scene modes (e.g., Portrait, Landscape, Sports).

3. Autofocus System

The D7100 features a 51-point AF system with 15 cross-type sensors for precise focusing. Select your AF-area mode (e.g., Single-point AF, Dynamic-area AF, 3D-tracking) via the AF-mode selector.

4. ISO Sensitivity

Adjust ISO sensitivity from 100 to 6400, expandable to 25600 (Hi 2), to control image brightness in varying light conditions. Higher ISO values allow shooting in darker environments but may introduce more noise.

5. Video Recording

6. Connectivity

The D7100 is compatible with the optional WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter for Wi-Fi connectivity, enabling wireless transfer of images and remote camera control. GPS functionality is also supported with separately sold accessories.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning the Camera Body and Lens

  • Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the camera body. For stubborn dirt, lightly dampen the cloth with distilled water.
  • For the lens, use a lens brush to remove dust, then gently wipe with a microfiber lens cloth and lens cleaning solution. Avoid touching the glass elements directly.

2. Sensor Cleaning

The D7100 has an integrated dust reduction system. If dust spots persist on images, professional sensor cleaning is recommended. Attempting to clean the sensor yourself without proper tools and knowledge can cause damage.

3. Battery Care

  • Store batteries in a cool, dry place when not in use.
  • Avoid fully discharging batteries frequently to prolong their lifespan.
  • Charge batteries only with the specified MH-25 Quick Charger.

4. Storage

When storing the camera for extended periods, remove the battery and memory cards. Store the camera in a dry, well-ventilated area, preferably in a camera bag with desiccant packets to prevent mold and mildew.

Troubleshooting

Camera Does Not Turn On

  • Ensure the battery is fully charged and correctly inserted.
  • Check that the battery contacts are clean.

Images Are Blurry

  • Verify that the lens is properly attached and clean.
  • Check focus mode settings (AF-S for still subjects, AF-C for moving subjects).
  • Ensure shutter speed is fast enough to prevent camera shake, especially in low light.
  • If using VR (Vibration Reduction) lens, ensure VR is enabled when needed, but turn off when using a tripod.

Memory Card Error

  • Ensure the memory card is inserted correctly and is not locked (write-protected).
  • Try formatting the card in the camera (note: this will erase all data).
  • Test with a different, compatible memory card.

Flash Does Not Fire

  • Check flash mode settings; ensure it's not set to 'Off' or 'Red-eye reduction' in bright conditions.
  • Ensure the flash is popped up if using the built-in flash.
