4. Setup

4.1. Battery Installation

Both the King Pro and King X units require 4 AA batteries for operation. Locate the battery compartment cover on the underside of each unit, slide it open, insert the batteries according to the polarity indicators, and close the cover securely.

4.2. Mounting the Units

4.3. Initial Power On and Channel Setting

Turn on both the transmitter and receiver units using their respective ON/OFF switches. The King Pro features a backlit LCD screen. To ensure proper communication, both the transmitter and all receiver units must be set to the same channel. Refer to the on-screen interface of the King Pro to adjust the channel settings. Typically, a 'CH' button or menu option will allow channel selection.

4.4. Firmware Updates

The King Pro and King X units are equipped with a USB port for firmware updates. Regularly check the PIXEL official website for the latest firmware versions to ensure compatibility with new camera models and flashguns, and to benefit from performance improvements. Follow the instructions provided with the firmware download for the update process.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Basic Flash Triggering

Once the transmitter and receiver(s) are powered on and set to the same channel, a test flash can be performed by pressing the test button on the King Pro transmitter. When mounted on the camera, the flash will trigger automatically with the camera's shutter release.

5.2. TTL (Through-The-Lens) Mode

The King Pro supports TTL flash metering, allowing your camera and flash to automatically determine the correct exposure. Ensure your flash unit is set to TTL mode. The King Pro's interface allows for TTL exposure compensation adjustments for individual groups (A, B, C).

5.3. Manual Flash Mode

For precise control, the King Pro allows you to set flash power manually for each group. Switch the desired flash group to manual mode via the King Pro's interface and adjust the power output (e.g., 1/1, 1/2, 1/4, etc.).

5.4. High-Speed Sync (HSS)

The King Pro supports high-speed sync up to 1/8000th of a second with compatible speedlites and monolights. This feature allows you to use flash at shutter speeds faster than your camera's native sync speed, useful for overpowering ambient light or using wide apertures in bright conditions. Activate HSS through your camera or flash settings as required.

5.5. Shutter Release Function

The King Pro includes a shutter release function. Connect a compatible USB cable from the King Pro to your camera's remote port. This allows for remote camera triggering, and it is possible to trigger multiple cameras simultaneously if properly configured with additional cables.

5.6. TTL Pass-Through Hot Shoe

The King Pro transmitter features a TTL pass-through hot shoe on top. This allows you to mount an additional flash unit directly onto the transmitter, which can operate in either TTL or manual mode, while still controlling remote flashes wirelessly.

6. Maintenance

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your PIXEL King Pro, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible Cause / Solution
Flashes not firing or misfiring intermittently.
  • Ensure both transmitter and receiver(s) are powered on and have fresh batteries.
  • Verify that all units are set to the same channel.
  • Check the distance between units; while rated for 300m, environmental factors can affect range.
  • Ensure hot shoe contacts are clean and units are securely mounted.
  • Check for radio interference from other wireless devices.
Incorrect exposure (over/under-exposed images).
  • In TTL mode, check for exposure compensation settings on the King Pro or your camera.
  • In Manual mode, verify the power settings for each flash group.
  • Ensure your flash unit is compatible and correctly set to TTL or Manual mode.
  • Update firmware to the latest version, as compatibility issues can affect exposure.
Flash sync issues (e.g., black bar in images at high shutter speeds).
  • Ensure High-Speed Sync (HSS) is enabled on your camera and flash if shooting above the camera's native flash sync speed.
  • Verify that your flash unit supports HSS.
Flash unit not compatible.
  • While the King Pro is designed for Nikon, not all third-party flashes may be fully compatible. Check the PIXEL website for a list of supported flash units.
  • Ensure your flash unit's firmware is also up to date.
