Introduction
The AcuRite 02020 Portable Lightning Detector is designed to provide early warnings of lightning activity. This device detects cloud-to-ground, cloud-to-cloud, and intra-cloud lightning strikes within a 25-mile (40 km) range. It features a loud alarm, a flashing red LED light, and text messages on a backlit display to alert you to nearby storms. Its compact, pocket-sized design with a no-slip clip ensures portability, making it suitable for both outdoor and indoor use. The detector incorporates enhanced interference rejection to minimize false alerts.

Initial Placement:
Upon initial power-on, the detector may display a "relocate" message. This indicates potential electromagnetic interference. For optimal performance, position the detector away from other electronic devices (e.g., cell phones, computers, TVs) or large metal objects. Holding the device and moving slightly can help it establish a clear listening state. The device is designed for both indoor and outdoor use, offering flexibility in placement.
Operating Instructions
Once batteries are installed and the device is powered on, it will begin listening for lightning activity. The display provides real-time information about detected strikes.

Understanding the Display:
- Strike Count: Displays the running total of lightning strikes detected since the device was last reset or powered on.
- Estimated Distance: Shows the approximate distance to the nearest lightning strike in miles (mi) or kilometers (km).
- "DETECTED!" Message: Appears when lightning activity is identified within range.
- Lightning Alert Icon: A flashing lightning bolt icon indicates active detection.
Alerts and Warnings:
When lightning is detected, the device will:
- Emit an audible alarm.
- Flash a red LED light at the top of the unit.
- Display a "DETECTED!" message and estimated distance on the screen.
Backlight Function:
Press the light bulb button (💡) on the front of the device to activate the momentary backlight for easier viewing in dark conditions.

Unit of Measurement (Miles/Kilometers):
The device defaults to displaying distance in miles. To switch to kilometers, or if the unit resets to miles, refer to the device's on-screen prompts or consult the full manual for specific button press sequences to change the unit of measurement.
Maintenance
Battery Replacement:
Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display. Always use fresh AAA alkaline batteries. Remove batteries if the device will be stored for an extended period to prevent leakage.
Cleaning:
Wipe the device with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these may damage the display or casing. Ensure the device is dry before use.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Solution |
|---|---|
| "Unable to detect...please relocate" message | This message indicates potential electromagnetic interference. Move the detector away from other electronic devices (e.g., cell phones, computers, TVs) or large metal objects. Sometimes simply holding the device and moving slightly can resolve this. |
| No lightning detected during a storm | Ensure the device has fresh batteries. Verify there are no strong sources of interference nearby. The detection range is up to 25 miles; lightning outside this range will not be detected. |
| False lightning alerts | While the device has enhanced interference rejection, strong electromagnetic fields from certain appliances or power lines can occasionally cause false alerts. Try relocating the device. |
| Display is dim or blank | Check battery levels and replace if necessary. Ensure batteries are inserted with correct polarity. |
| Distance unit resets to miles | Some units may default to miles upon power cycle. You may need to manually switch the unit to kilometers each time the device is turned on if that is your preferred measurement. Refer to the full product manual for specific instructions on changing units. |
