Introduction
The Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series VT Bass DI pedal is a versatile tool designed to deliver a wide range of bass tones directly to your rig or stage. Featuring SansAmp circuitry and comprehensive controls, it allows bassists to sculpt their sound from classic vintage amplifiers to modern rock setups. This manual provides essential information for setting up, operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting your VT Bass DI pedal.
Key Features
- Bass DI/Preamp with Speaker Emulation
- Character Control for diverse tonal shaping
- Parallel Output for flexible signal routing
- XLR Output for direct connection to mixing consoles
Setup
Before operating your VT Bass DI pedal, ensure proper connections and power supply.
Power Supply
The VT Bass DI pedal operates on a 9V power supply (not included). It can be powered by a standard 9V battery or an external 9V DC power adapter. Ensure the power adapter is center-negative and provides sufficient current.
Connections
Connect your bass guitar to the INPUT jack using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
For output, you have several options:
- 1/4-inch Output: Connect to your bass amplifier or other effects pedals.
- XLR Output: Connect directly to a mixing console or audio interface for balanced signal transmission. Use the PRE/POST switch to select whether the signal sent to the XLR output is pre-EQ/drive or post-EQ/drive.
- Parallel Output: Provides an unprocessed, buffered signal from your instrument, allowing you to send your dry signal to another amplifier or tuner.

Operating Instructions
The VT Bass DI pedal offers a range of controls to shape your bass tone. Experiment with each knob to find your desired sound.
Controls Overview
- LEVEL: Adjusts the overall output volume of the pedal.
- BLEND: Mixes the direct instrument signal with the SansAmp processed signal. Turn clockwise for more SansAmp effect, counter-clockwise for more dry signal.
- MID: Controls the mid-range frequencies.
- CHARACTER: Sweeps through different amplifier voicings, from vintage tube amps to modern rock rigs. This control significantly alters the pedal's tonal response.
- DRIVE: Adjusts the amount of gain and overdrive.
- LOW: Controls the low-end frequencies.
- HIGH: Controls the high-end frequencies.
- BITE Switch: Engages a treble boost and tightens the low end for a more aggressive tone.
- PHANTOM & GROUND CONNECT: Engages phantom power from a mixing console via the XLR output and provides a ground lift to eliminate hum.
- -20dB XLR: Attenuates the XLR output signal by 20dB, useful for matching levels with sensitive inputs.
- CAB SIM: Engages the built-in speaker cabinet emulation for a more natural, mic'd amp sound when going direct.
Tone Shaping Tips
Start with all EQ controls (Low, Mid, High) at noon and the Blend control at 50%. Adjust the Character knob to find a base amplifier style you like, then fine-tune with the EQ and Drive controls. Use the Bite switch for added presence and aggression. Remember that the Character control interacts significantly with the EQ and Drive, offering a wide palette of sounds.
Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your VT Bass DI pedal, follow these maintenance guidelines:
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the pedal's exterior. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the pedal in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Battery Replacement: If using a 9V battery, replace it when the LED indicator dims or the sound quality degrades. Disconnect the input cable when not in use to conserve battery life.
- Connections: Periodically check all cables and connections for wear and tear. Replace damaged cables to prevent signal loss or noise.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your VT Bass DI pedal, consult the following common troubleshooting steps:
- No Sound:
- Ensure the power supply is correctly connected and functioning.
- Check all instrument cables for proper connection and integrity.
- Verify that the LEVEL knob is not set to minimum.
- If using battery power, replace the 9V battery.
- Unwanted Noise/Hum:
- Engage the GROUND CONNECT switch if using the XLR output to eliminate ground loops.
- Ensure all power supplies are isolated and free from interference.
- Check for faulty cables or connections.
- Weak or Distorted Signal (unexpectedly):
- Adjust the DRIVE knob to reduce overdrive if the signal is too distorted.
- Check the -20dB XLR switch if the XLR output is too hot for the receiving device.
- Ensure your instrument's output level is appropriate for the pedal's input.
