Preparation for Application

Proper surface preparation is crucial for optimal adhesion and performance.

  1. Clean the Surface: Ensure the application surface is clean, dry, and free of grease, oil, dirt, and loose debris. For best results, use denatured alcohol to clean the surface, as it leaves no residue.
  2. Rough the Surface (Optional but Recommended): For enhanced bonding, lightly sand the surface with 60-grit sandpaper. After sanding, clean the surface again to remove any dust.
  3. Protect Surrounding Areas: Use painter's tape or other masking materials to protect areas not intended for coating from overspray.
  4. Shake Can Thoroughly: Shake the can vigorously for at least one minute before use and occasionally during application.

Application Instructions

Follow these steps for effective application of Flex Seal Clear:

  1. Hold Can Correctly: Hold the can 8 to 12 inches from the surface.
  2. Apply Even Coats: Spray using an even, sweeping motion. Apply multiple thin coats rather than one thick coat to prevent drips and ensure proper curing.
  3. Allow Drying Time: Allow each coat to dry for several minutes until tacky before applying the next.
  4. Curing Time: For optimal results, allow 24 to 48 hours for the product to fully cure. Curing time may vary depending on temperature and humidity.
  5. Layering: For larger cracks or holes, consider using a backing material like screen mesh before applying Flex Seal to provide structural support.

Maintenance and Durability

Flex Seal is designed for long-lasting flexibility and durability. It resists sagging or dripping in summer heat and cracking or peeling in winter cold. The clear formula may yellow over time when exposed to direct sunlight. If desired, the cured coating can be painted any color.

Regular inspection of sealed areas is recommended. Reapply as needed to maintain the protective barrier, especially in areas subject to high wear or extreme conditions.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Bubbles during application: If bubbles appear, the product is likely being applied too thickly. Apply thinner, more even coats and allow sufficient drying time between layers.
  • Poor adhesion: Ensure the surface is thoroughly cleaned and prepared as per the "Preparation for Application" section. Oily, dirty, or unprepared surfaces will prevent proper bonding.
  • Leaks persist after application: This product is best suited for low-stress sealing situations. It may not hold up under high-pressure water or significant structural stress. For larger holes or areas under pressure, consider using a backing material or multiple, thicker layers.
  • Clear coating yellowing: The clear formula may naturally yellow when exposed to prolonged sunlight. This is a cosmetic change and does not typically affect the sealant's performance. If aesthetics are critical, consider painting over the cured clear Flex Seal.
