5. Operating Instructions: Performing a Blood Glucose Test
Follow these steps to perform a blood glucose test:
- Prepare Your Lancing Device: Load a new lancet into your lancing device according to its instructions.
- Wash Your Hands: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water. Dry them completely.
- Insert a Test Strip: Remove a ReliOn Prime Test Strip from its vial and immediately close the vial cap tightly. Insert the test strip into the meter's test strip port. The meter will turn on automatically.
- Obtain a Blood Sample: Use the lancing device to prick the side of your fingertip or an approved alternate site (such as the palm) to obtain a blood drop. Gently squeeze your finger until a small drop of blood forms. The required sample size is 0.5 microliters.
- Apply Blood Sample: Touch the tip of the test strip to the blood drop. The blood will be drawn into the strip. Do not apply blood to the top of the strip.
- Read Results: The meter will begin a countdown. Your blood glucose result will appear on the display in as little as 7 seconds.
- Record Results: Record your result in your logbook.
- Dispose of Used Materials: Carefully remove the used test strip and dispose of it along with the used lancet in a sharps container.

7. Maintenance and Care
7.1. Cleaning the Meter
Clean the exterior of your ReliOn Prime meter regularly with a soft, damp cloth. Use a mild detergent if necessary, then wipe with a clean, damp cloth and dry thoroughly. Do not immerse the meter in water or use harsh cleaning agents, as this can damage the device.
7.2. Storage
Store the ReliOn Prime meter and test strips in a cool, dry place within the recommended temperature range (typically 32-122°F or 0-50°C). Keep them away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Always store test strips in their original vial with the cap tightly closed to protect them from moisture.
