Always prioritize safety when assembling, operating, or maintaining the trailer. Failure to follow these instructions could result in serious injury or property damage.

  • Read All Instructions: Understand all assembly and operating procedures before use.
  • Wear Safety Gear: Use appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves and eye protection, during assembly.
  • Proper Assembly: Ensure all components are correctly assembled and tightened according to instructions.
  • Load Capacity: Do not exceed the trailer's maximum load capacity of 610 lbs or the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 800 lbs.
  • Weight Distribution: Properly distribute the load on the trailer to maintain stability during transport.
  • Tire Pressure: Maintain correct tire pressure as specified in the maintenance section.
  • Lighting: Verify all trailer lights are functional before each use, especially brake lights and turn signals.
  • Coupler and Safety Chains: Always secure the coupler to the tow vehicle's hitch ball and attach safety chains before towing.
  • Road Safety: Drive cautiously, especially when towing. Allow for increased stopping distances and wider turns.
  • Maintenance: Regularly inspect and maintain the trailer as outlined in this manual.

3. Setup and Assembly

The Ironton Personal Watercraft and Boat Trailer Kit requires assembly. Follow these general steps. Refer to the detailed assembly diagrams and instructions provided with your product packaging for specific bolt sizes and torque specifications.

  1. Unpack Components: Carefully remove all parts from the packaging and verify against the parts list.
  2. Assemble Frame: Connect the main frame sections using the provided bolts, washers, and locking nuts. Ensure connections are snug but not fully tightened until the axle is in place.
  3. Install Axle: Position the axle frame between the main rails. Loosen frame bolts if necessary to allow the axle to fit correctly into its designated notches. Secure the axle to the frame.
  4. Attach Wheels: Mount the 12-inch tires and wheels to the axle hubs. Ensure proper tightening of lug nuts.
  5. Install Fenders: Attach the protective fenders over the wheels.
  6. Mount Bunks: Secure the padded bunks to the trailer frame. Adjust their position to properly support your watercraft.
  7. Install Coupler and Winch Post: Attach the 1 7/8-inch coupler to the tongue of the trailer. Install the winch post assembly.
  8. Electrical Wiring: Route the wiring for the light set through the trailer frame. Connect the tail lights, side marker lights, and license plate light (if applicable). Ensure all electrical connections are secure and properly grounded. Note: Some users have found it necessary to ensure good electrical continuity for grounding, potentially by scraping paint from contact points or adding jumper wires.
  9. Attach Safety Chains: Secure the safety chains to the trailer tongue.
  10. Final Tightening: Once all components are in place and aligned, fully tighten all bolts to the specified torque.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of your trailer.

  • Tire Maintenance: Check tire pressure before each trip. Refer to the tire sidewall for recommended pressure. Inspect tires for wear, cuts, or damage.
  • Wheel Bearings: Periodically inspect and grease wheel bearings. This is vital for smooth operation and preventing overheating. Use a grease gun to inject marine-grade grease.
  • Electrical System: Regularly check all lights and wiring for corrosion, damage, or loose connections. Ensure proper grounding.
  • Frame Inspection: Inspect the steel frame for any signs of rust, cracks, or damage. Touch up any scratches on the powder-coat finish to prevent corrosion.
  • Fasteners: Periodically check all bolts, nuts, and fasteners for tightness. Re-tighten as necessary.
  • Coupler: Inspect the coupler for wear or damage. Ensure it latches securely onto the hitch ball.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Lights Not Working:
    • Check the electrical connection to the tow vehicle.
    • Inspect the trailer's wiring for cuts, pinches, or loose connections.
    • Ensure proper grounding. The trailer frame must have good electrical continuity. Scrape paint from grounding points if necessary to ensure a solid connection.
    • Check bulbs for damage or burnout.
  • Trailer Sway:
    • Ensure the watercraft is loaded correctly and centered on the bunks.
    • Verify proper tongue weight (typically 10-15% of the total trailer weight).
    • Check tire pressure on both the trailer and tow vehicle.
  • Excessive Noise from Wheels:
    • Inspect wheel bearings for proper lubrication and adjustment.
    • Check for loose lug nuts.
