Image 1: Rear Panel Connections
This image displays the rear of the Actiontec C2000A modem router. From left to right, it shows an antenna connector, a green DSL port labeled "1-2", a black PHONE port, two VOIP ports labeled "1" and "2", a coaxial port, four yellow Ethernet LAN ports labeled "1" through "4", a blue LAN/WAN port, a USB port, a red RESET button, a POWER input (12VDC 1.8A), and another antenna connector.
3.1. Port Descriptions
- DSL (Green Port): Connects to your VDSL/ADSL line from the wall jack.
- PHONE (Black Port): For connecting a telephone if VoIP services are not used through the router.
- VOIP (Ports 1 & 2): For connecting VoIP phones.
- Ethernet (Yellow Ports 1-4): For connecting wired devices such as computers, gaming consoles, or network storage.
- LAN/WAN (Blue Port): Can function as an additional LAN port or as a WAN port for connecting to another modem (e.g., cable modem) if the C2000A is used as a router only.
- USB Port: For connecting USB devices, such as external storage for network sharing.
- RESET Button: Used to restore the router to factory default settings. Press and hold for 10 seconds while the device is powered on.
- POWER: Connects the included power adapter.
- Antenna Connectors: For attaching the external Wi-Fi antennas.
4. Setup Instructions
- Positioning the Router: Place the router in a central location in your home or office, away from obstructions and sources of interference (e.g., microwaves, cordless phones). Ensure good ventilation.
- Connect the DSL Line: Connect one end of the DSL cable (RJ-11) to the green DSL port on the router and the other end to your wall telephone jack. If you have a splitter, connect it to the splitter's modem port.
- Connect Power: Connect the power adapter to the POWER port on the router and plug the other end into an electrical outlet. The power LED on the front panel should illuminate.
- Connect Wired Devices (Optional): For wired connections, use an Ethernet cable to connect your computer or other network devices to any of the yellow Ethernet LAN ports (1-4) or the blue LAN/WAN port (if configured as LAN).
- Wait for Initialization: Allow several minutes for the modem router to power on and establish a connection. The DSL and Internet indicator lights on the front panel should become solid green, indicating a successful connection.
- Connect Wireless Devices:
- Locate the Wi-Fi Network Name (SSID) and Password (WPA/WPA2 key) on the label usually found on the bottom or side of the router.
- On your wireless device (laptop, smartphone, tablet), search for available Wi-Fi networks.
- Select your router's SSID and enter the password when prompted.
- Access Router Interface: Open a web browser and enter the default IP address (e.g., 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) found on the router's label. Log in using the default username and password (also on the label) to configure advanced settings if needed.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1. Internet Access
Once the DSL and Internet indicator lights are solid green, your modem router is successfully connected to the internet. You can now browse the web, stream content, and use online applications.
5.2. Wireless Network (Wi-Fi)
The C2000A provides a wireless network for your devices. Ensure your devices are connected to the correct SSID using the provided password. For optimal performance, keep your router in an open area.
5.3. Wired Network
Devices connected to the Ethernet LAN ports will automatically receive network access. These connections are generally more stable and faster than wireless connections, ideal for desktop computers or media servers.
5.4. USB Storage Sharing
If you connect a USB storage device to the USB port, you may be able to share files across your network. Refer to the router's web interface for specific instructions on enabling and configuring USB storage sharing.
6. Maintenance
- Regular Reboot: Occasionally rebooting your modem router (unplugging the power for 30 seconds and plugging it back in) can resolve minor connectivity issues and improve performance.
- Firmware Updates: Check the Actiontec support website for firmware updates. Keeping your firmware up-to-date ensures optimal performance, security, and access to new features.
- Physical Cleaning: Keep the router clean and free of dust. Ensure ventilation openings are not blocked to prevent overheating.
- Security: Regularly change your Wi-Fi password and router login credentials to strong, unique passwords.
7. Troubleshooting
- No Internet Connection:
- Check all cable connections (DSL, Ethernet, Power).
- Verify that the DSL and Internet indicator lights are solid green. If not, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
- Reboot the modem router.
- Slow Wi-Fi or Dropped Connections:
- Ensure the router is centrally located and not obstructed.
- Check for interference from other electronic devices.
- Try changing the Wi-Fi channel in the router's settings.
- Consider replacing the DSL cable with a Cat5e cable with RJ-11 connectors if experiencing significant signal degradation, as noted by some users.
- High-Pitched Whine from Device:
Some users have reported a high-pitched whine from the device. If this is disruptive, consider relocating the device to an area where the sound is less noticeable.
- Cannot Access Router Settings:
- Ensure your device is connected to the router (wired or wireless).
- Verify the correct IP address and login credentials.
- If you forgot the password, perform a factory reset using the RESET button (refer to Section 3.1).
