The side of the device includes:
- Probe Connection Ports: Two ports for securely attaching the ultrasonic probe cable.
5. Setup
5.1 Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment on the rear of the device.
- Slide the battery compartment cover downwards to open.
- Insert two AA 1.5V alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Replace the battery compartment cover, sliding it upwards until it clicks into place.
5.2 Probe Connection
- Identify the two probe connection ports on the side of the MT160 unit.
- Connect the two plugs from the ultrasonic probe cable into these ports. Ensure a firm connection.
6. Operation
6.1 Power On/Off
Press the red circular button once to power on the device. To power off, press and hold the same button until the display turns off. The device also features auto sleep and auto power off functions to conserve battery life.
6.2 Basic Measurement
- Ensure the probe is connected and the device is powered on.
- Apply a small amount of coupling agent to the surface of the material to be measured. This eliminates air gaps between the probe and the material, which would interfere with ultrasonic wave transmission.
- Place the probe firmly and flatly onto the prepared surface.
- The LCD display will show the thickness reading. The coupling status indicator will confirm proper contact.
- Remove the probe from the surface after the reading stabilizes.
6.3 Calibration
Calibration is crucial for accurate measurements. The MT160 allows for calibration using a known thickness or by measuring sound speed.
- Press the CAL button to enter calibration mode.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate using a material of known thickness or by inputting the sound velocity.
- Confirm the calibration settings.
6.4 Unit Selection
Press the IN/MM button to toggle between Metric (millimeters) and Imperial (inches) units for your measurements.
6.5 Scan Mode
For continuous measurement and to find the minimum thickness over an area, use the Scan Mode.
- Press the SCAN button to activate Scan Mode.
- Move the probe across the surface. The device will continuously update the display with readings (ten per second).
- Press the SCAN button again to exit Scan Mode.
6.6 Memory Functions
The MT160 can store up to 20 files, with each file containing up to 99 values.
- Use the designated memory button (often indicated by a folder icon or similar) to save readings.
- Navigate through stored files and values using the arrow buttons.
6.7 Indicators
- Coupling Status Indicator: Displays the quality of contact between the probe and the material. A stable indicator means good coupling.
- Remaining Battery Indicator: Shows the current battery level in real-time.
7. Maintenance
7.1 Cleaning
- After each use, wipe the probe and the device with a soft, dry cloth to remove any coupling agent residue or dirt.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the device's surface or display.
7.2 Storage
- Store the MT160 in its hard carrying case when not in use to protect it from dust, moisture, and physical damage.
- If storing for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
8. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Mitech MT160, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Device does not power on | Dead or incorrectly installed batteries | Replace batteries with new AA 1.5V alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity. |
| No reading or unstable reading | Poor coupling, no coupling agent, incorrect probe placement, or material properties | Apply sufficient coupling agent. Ensure probe is flat and firm on the surface. Check if the material is suitable for ultrasonic measurement. |
| Inaccurate readings | Device not calibrated, incorrect sound velocity setting, or surface condition | Perform calibration using a known thickness. Verify sound velocity setting. Ensure the measurement surface is clean and smooth. |
| Display is dim or flickering | Low battery | Replace batteries. |
If the problem persists after attempting these solutions, please contact Mitech customer support for further assistance.
