3. Operating Instructions

Yarn Selection and Preparation:

The Prym MIDI knitting mill is designed to work with yarn thicknesses between 2 and 6. Select a yarn that is smooth and consistent to ensure optimal performance and prevent skipped stitches. Wind your yarn into a cake or ball that feeds smoothly.

Threading the Machine:

  1. Open the clear cover of the knitting mill.
  2. Locate the yarn guide slot on the side of the machine.
  3. Feed the yarn through the yarn guide, ensuring it passes through the tension guide. The tension guide has multiple positions; select one that provides appropriate tension for your yarn. Too much tension can cause the machine to skip stitches or jam.
  4. Bring the yarn end to the inside of the knitting mill, ready to be caught by the hooks.

Knitting Tubes (Circular Knitting - 20 Hooks):

  1. Ensure the machine is set to circular knitting mode (refer to your specific model's switch or lever if applicable).
  2. Begin by manually placing the yarn onto the hooks as instructed in the detailed manual provided with your machine. This typically involves alternating hooks for the first row.
  3. Once the initial cast-on is complete, slowly turn the crank handle clockwise. The hooks will automatically catch the yarn and form stitches.
  4. Maintain a consistent turning speed and monitor the yarn tension. If stitches are dropped, the tension may be too high or the yarn may be snagging.
  5. As knitting progresses, the knitted tube will emerge from the bottom of the machine. You may need to gently pull the fabric down to assist the process, especially for the first few rows.

Knitting Flat Panels (16 Hooks):

  1. Switch the machine to flat knitting mode (consult your manual for the specific mechanism). This will typically disengage a section of the hooks.
  2. Cast on the yarn onto the active 16 hooks, following the flat knitting cast-on instructions.
  3. Turn the crank handle back and forth, reversing direction at the end of each row. The machine will knit a flat panel.
  4. Ensure the yarn is properly caught by all active hooks at each turn.

Changing Yarn Colors:

To change yarn colors, simply tie the end of the current yarn to the beginning of the new yarn using a small, secure knot. Trim any excess yarn close to the knot. Continue knitting, and the new color will be seamlessly integrated.

4. Maintenance

Cleaning:

To ensure smooth operation and longevity of your knitting mill, regularly clean it. Use a soft brush or compressed air to remove lint and yarn fibers from the hooks and internal mechanisms. Avoid using water or harsh chemicals.

Storage:

When not in use, store the Prym MIDI Knitting Mill in a clean, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Keeping it in its original packaging or a protective cover can help prevent dust accumulation and damage.
