5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Preparing Ingredients
- Ensure all ingredients are dry and free from foreign objects (stones, metal, etc.).
- The mill is suitable for grinding various dry grains (e.g., wheat, rye, oats, rice, corn), beans, and spices (e.g., coffee beans, peppercorns).
- Do not attempt to grind wet, oily, or very soft ingredients as this can clog the mill.
5.2 Adjusting Grind Fineness
The fineness adjustment knob on the front of the mill allows you to select your desired grind:
- Turn the knob towards the larger dots for a coarser grind.
- Turn the knob towards the smaller dots for a finer grind.
- It is recommended to start with a coarser setting and gradually adjust to finer settings if needed.
5.3 Grinding Process
- With the mill securely attached and a collection bowl in place, plug in your Ankarsrum Assistent.
- Set the speed control of your Ankarsrum Assistent to a medium speed. Operating at excessively high speeds is not recommended for this attachment.
- Slowly pour the ingredients into the hopper. Do not overload the hopper; feed ingredients gradually to ensure consistent grinding.
- Allow the mill to process the ingredients. The grinding time will vary depending on the type of ingredient and desired fineness.
- Once grinding is complete, turn off your Ankarsrum Assistent and unplug it from the power outlet.

7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Grain and Spice Mill, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|
| Mill grinds too slowly. | Very fine setting selected; hard ingredients; overloading. | Adjust to a coarser setting. Feed ingredients gradually. Ensure ingredients are dry. |
| Ground material is not fine enough. | Fineness adjustment knob set too coarse. | Turn the fineness adjustment knob towards the finer setting (smaller dots). Note that this is a burr mill and may not produce extremely fine, fluffy flour like some impact mills. |
| Mill is clogged. | Wet or oily ingredients used; overloading; foreign object. | Unplug the machine. Disassemble and clean the mill thoroughly. Ensure ingredients are dry and free of debris before grinding. |
| Flour/dust escapes during grinding. | Normal operation for dry grinding. | This is common with dry grinding. Ensure a large enough collection bowl is used and be prepared for minor cleanup around the mill. |
