2.3. Counterweight and Telescope Attachment
- Thread the counterweight shaft into the appropriate opening on the mount head.
- Slide the counterweights onto the shaft and secure them.
- Attach your telescope to the mount's dovetail saddle (45mm EQ5-type).

2.4. Balancing the Mount
Proper balancing is crucial for smooth tracking and to prevent strain on the mount's gears.
- Declination Axis (DEC): Unlock the DEC clutch and slide the telescope until it remains stationary.
- Right Ascension Axis (RA): Unlock the RA clutch. Adjust the counterweights until the mount remains stationary.
2.5. Polar Alignment (Initial Setup)
For accurate tracking, especially for astrophotography, polar alignment is essential. The EQ3-2 mount is prepared for a polar scope (optional accessory).
- Point the RA axis of the mount towards Polaris (Northern Hemisphere) or Sigma Octantis (Southern Hemisphere).
- Use the altitude and azimuth adjustment knobs to fine-tune the alignment.
- If using an optional polar scope, follow its specific instructions.
3. Operating the Mount
Once assembled and balanced, your EQ3-2 mount is ready for use.
3.1. Manual Tracking
- The mount features micrometric movement handles for both Right Ascension (RA) and Declination (DEC) axes.
- For large adjustments, loosen clutches, point manually, then re-tighten.
- For fine adjustments and tracking, use the slow-motion control cables.
3.2. Using Eyepieces and Focuser
- Insert the desired eyepiece into the focuser.
- Use the graduated focuser to achieve a sharp image.
- The included 2 Barlow lenses can be used to double the magnification.
3.3. Using the Finderscope
The 6x to 30x magnification pointer (reflex finderscope) helps in locating objects.
- Align the finderscope with your main telescope during daylight hours.
- Adjust the finderscope's alignment screws until the same object is centered in both.
3.4. Optional Motorization (AO3000 Dual-Axis)
If you have purchased the optional AO3000 dual-axis motorization kit, refer to its separate instruction manual. This motorization allows for automatic tracking of celestial objects. The power source for this motorization is an AC adapter.
4. Maintenance
Proper care and maintenance will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Sky-Watcher EQ3-2 mount.
- Cleaning: Use a soft, lint-free cloth. For optical surfaces, use specialized optical cleaning solutions.
- Storage: Store in a dry, dust-free environment, ideally in original packaging or a padded case.
- Lubrication: Gears are pre-lubricated. Avoid disassembly unless experienced.
- Clutches and Knobs: Periodically check for smooth function and avoid overtightening.
5. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your EQ3-2 mount.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Image is blurry/out of focus. | Improper focuser adjustment. | Adjust the focuser knobs slowly until the image is sharp. |
| Objects drift quickly out of view. | Poor polar alignment; RA clutch loose. | Improve polar alignment. Ensure RA clutch is tightened. |
| Mount is unstable/wobbly. | Tripod legs not secured; mount head not tightened; unbalanced load. | Ensure tripod legs are secured. Securely attach mount head. Re-balance the telescope. |
| Difficulty finding objects. | Finderscope not aligned. | Align the finderscope with the main telescope. |
