Introduction and Overview
The Active Aqua Root Spa is a deep water culture (DWC) hydroponic system designed for efficient plant growth. This 5-gallon bucket system simplifies the hydroponic process, making it accessible and effective for cultivating various plants. By continuously oxygenating the nutrient solution, the system promotes robust root development and overall plant health.
The system is engineered for ease of use and reliability, featuring watertight seals to prevent leaks and a multi-purpose air hose for optimal air delivery. It eliminates the need for traditional air stones, offering a cost-effective solution for oxygenating the nutrient solution.

Components
The Active Aqua Root Spa system includes the following components:
- 5-Gallon Buckets: Four durable plastic buckets designed to hold the nutrient solution.
- Bucket Baskets (10-inch): Baskets that fit into the top of each bucket, designed to hold your chosen growing medium and support the plant.
- Multi-Output Air Pump: An air pump responsible for oxygenating the nutrient solution.
- Multi-Purpose Air Hose Assembly: Tubing that delivers air from the pump to the bottom of each bucket.
- ½-inch Grommet Fitting: For creating a watertight seal where the air hose enters the bucket.
- ½-inch Elbow Fitting: For connecting the air hose within the bucket.
- ¼-inch Black Tubing: Additional tubing for air delivery connections.

Setup Instructions
- Prepare Buckets: Ensure all 5-gallon buckets are clean. Insert the ½-inch grommet fitting into the pre-drilled hole near the bottom of each bucket.
- Install Air Hose: Connect the multi-purpose air hose assembly to the air pump. Route the air hose into each bucket through the grommet fitting. Secure the ½-inch elbow fitting to the end of the air hose inside the bucket, ensuring it points towards the bottom for optimal air distribution. It is highly recommended to apply a small amount of silicone lubricant or food-grade lubricant around the air hose hole to facilitate easier insertion and removal of the air hose.
- Place Bucket Baskets: Position the 10-inch bucket baskets securely into the top opening of each 5-gallon bucket. These baskets will hold your growing medium (e.g., clay pebbles, rockwool).
- Add Growing Medium: Fill the bucket baskets with your preferred growing medium. Ensure the medium is clean and ready for planting.
- Prepare Nutrient Solution: In a separate container, mix your desired hydroponic nutrient solution according to the manufacturer's instructions. Fill each 5-gallon bucket with the prepared nutrient solution. The water level should be just below the bottom of the bucket basket, allowing the plant roots to reach the solution.
- Plant Seedlings: Carefully place your seedlings or rooted cuttings into the growing medium within the bucket baskets. Ensure the roots are positioned to grow down into the nutrient solution.
- Connect Air Pump: Plug in the multi-output air pump. Ensure all air hoses are properly connected and the pump is operating, creating bubbles in the nutrient solution. This oxygenates the water, which is crucial for root health.

Operation
The Root Spa system operates continuously to provide oxygen and nutrients to your plants. Consistent monitoring is key to successful growth.
- Water Level Monitoring: Regularly check the water level in each bucket. The multi-purpose air hose can also serve as a visual indicator for the water level. To check the level, simply remove the black tubing from the top of the multi-purpose air hose; the water level inside the hose will reflect the level in the bucket.
- Nutrient Solution Management: Periodically test the pH and Electrical Conductivity (EC) or Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) of your nutrient solution. To obtain a sample for testing, remove the black tubing from the multi-purpose air hose and drain a small amount of solution into a measuring cup. Adjust as necessary to maintain optimal levels for your specific plants. Refer to your nutrient manufacturer's guidelines for recommended ranges. To add nutrients, use a syringe or dropper to introduce the concentrated nutrient solution directly into the multi-purpose air hose, allowing it to mix with the solution in the bucket.
- Air Pump Operation: Ensure the air pump runs 24/7 to provide continuous oxygenation to the roots. The bubbling action is vital for preventing root rot and promoting nutrient uptake.
- Plant Growth: As plants grow, their water and nutrient demands will increase. Adjust nutrient concentrations and water levels accordingly.

Maintenance
- Solution Changes: It is recommended to completely change the nutrient solution every 1-2 weeks to prevent nutrient imbalances and pathogen buildup.
- Cleaning Components: Between growth cycles, thoroughly clean all buckets, hoses, and fittings to remove any algae, mineral buildup, or plant debris. Use a mild cleaning solution and rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- Air Pump Maintenance: Periodically check the air pump for proper function. Ensure air filters (if present) are clean and air output is consistent.
- Inspect for Leaks: Regularly inspect all connections and grommets for any signs of leaks. Address any leaks immediately to prevent water loss and potential damage.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No Bubbles from Air Hose | Air pump unplugged, kinked hose, clogged air hose. | Check power connection, straighten hose, clear any blockages in the hose. |
| Water Leakage | Loose grommet fitting, damaged hose. | Ensure grommet is seated correctly and tightly. Inspect hoses for damage and replace if necessary. |
| Plants Wilting/Poor Growth | Incorrect nutrient pH/EC, lack of oxygen, root rot, light issues. | Test and adjust pH/EC. Ensure air pump is running. Check roots for sliminess (root rot) and address. Optimize lighting conditions. |
| Algae Growth in Buckets | Light exposure to nutrient solution. | Ensure buckets are opaque and light cannot penetrate. Clean buckets thoroughly during solution changes. |
