2. Safety Information
Observe the following safety precautions to prevent injury and damage to the battery or equipment:
- Handling: Always handle the battery with care. Avoid dropping or subjecting it to severe impacts.
- Ventilation: Although sealed, ensure adequate ventilation when charging to dissipate any potential gas buildup.
- Short Circuits: Do not short-circuit the battery terminals. This can cause severe burns, fire, or explosion.
- Tools: Use insulated tools when working with batteries to prevent accidental short circuits.
- Disposal: Dispose of spent batteries according to local regulations. Lead-acid batteries contain hazardous materials.
- Eye Protection: Wear eye protection when working with batteries.
- Children: Keep batteries out of reach of children.
3. Setup and Installation
The SigmasTek SP12-12HR battery is designed to replace an existing battery in compatible UPS systems, such as the Conext CNB700. It is crucial to use the existing cables and hardware from your original UPS battery for connection.
- Preparation: Ensure the UPS system is powered off and disconnected from the main power supply before beginning installation.
- Remove Old Battery: Carefully remove the old battery from the UPS unit. Note the orientation of the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals.
- Connect New Battery: Connect the existing positive (+) cable from the UPS to the positive (+) terminal of the new SigmasTek battery. Connect the existing negative (-) cable from the UPS to the negative (-) terminal of the new SigmasTek battery. Ensure connections are secure.
- Secure Battery: Place the new battery securely within the UPS compartment.
- Initial Charge: After installation, it is recommended to fully charge the battery before putting the UPS into active service. Refer to the "Operating (Charging)" section for details.
Important: Always match positive to positive and negative to negative terminals. Incorrect polarity can damage the battery and the UPS system.
4. Operating (Charging)
The SigmasTek SP12-12HR is a rechargeable sealed lead-acid battery. Proper charging is essential for optimal performance and lifespan. The following charging instructions are provided on the battery label:
- Floating Use (Standby): For applications where the battery is continuously connected to a power source and used as a backup, maintain a charging voltage between 13.5V and 13.8V.
- Cycle Use (Deep Discharge/Recharge): For applications where the battery is regularly discharged and recharged, maintain a charging voltage between 14.4V and 15.0V.
- Initial Current: The initial charging current should not exceed 0.3CA (0.3 times the battery's ampere-hour rating). For a 12AH battery, this means a maximum initial current of 3.6 Amperes.
Always use a charger designed for sealed lead-acid batteries and ensure it adheres to these voltage and current specifications.
5. Maintenance
The SigmasTek SP12-12HR battery features a maintenance-free design due to its Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) technology and spill-proof construction. Regular maintenance is minimal but important for longevity:
- Cleaning: Keep the battery terminals and casing clean and free of dust or corrosion. Use a dry cloth for cleaning. If corrosion is present, disconnect the battery and clean with a mixture of baking soda and water, then rinse and dry thoroughly.
- Inspection: Periodically inspect the battery for any signs of physical damage, swelling, or leaks. If any damage is observed, discontinue use and replace the battery.
- Storage: If storing the battery for an extended period, ensure it is fully charged and stored in a cool, dry place. Recharge the battery every 3-6 months to prevent deep discharge, which can reduce its lifespan.
- Temperature: Operate and store the battery within recommended temperature ranges to maximize its service life. Extreme temperatures can negatively impact performance.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your SigmasTek SP12-12HR battery, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:
- Battery Not Charging:
- Verify that the charger is properly connected and functioning.
- Check the charging voltage and current against the specifications in the "Operating (Charging)" section.
- Ensure all connections to the battery terminals are secure and free of corrosion.
- Shortened Run Time:
- The battery may not be fully charged. Ensure proper charging cycles.
- The battery may be nearing the end of its service life. Lead-acid batteries have a finite number of charge/discharge cycles.
- Check for excessive load on the UPS system.
- Physical Damage/Swelling:
- If the battery casing appears swollen or damaged, discontinue use immediately. This indicates a serious internal fault.
If troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, contact customer support for further assistance.
