Product Overview

Oakton Instruments WD-35419-10 Series pH 700 Benchtop Meter with electrode, ATC probe, and stand.

Figure 1: Oakton Instruments WD-35419-10 Series pH 700 Benchtop Meter. The image displays the meter's digital display unit, a double-junction glass pH electrode immersed in a green liquid in a beaker, and an automatic temperature compensation (ATC) probe, all supported by an adjustable stand.

The Oakton Instruments pH 700 Benchtop Meter is designed for precise pH and temperature measurements. Its compact footprint makes it suitable for various laboratory environments. Key features include a large LCD display, intuitive button interface, and compatibility with a double-junction pH electrode for enhanced accuracy and longevity.

Setup

  1. Unpack Components: Carefully remove all components from the packaging.
  2. Position the Stand: Place the electrode stand on a stable, level surface next to the meter.
  3. Connect the Electrode: Connect the double-junction glass pH electrode to the BNC connector on the back of the meter. Ensure a secure connection.
  4. Connect the ATC Probe: Plug the ATC probe into its designated port on the meter.
  5. Connect Power: Plug the power adapter into the meter's power input, then connect it to a 110/220 VAC power outlet.
  6. Initial Power On: Press the power button to turn on the meter. The display should illuminate.

Operating Instructions

Calibration

Regular calibration is essential for accurate pH measurements. Calibrate the meter using at least two standard pH buffer solutions (e.g., pH 4.01, 7.00, and 10.00).

  1. Prepare Buffers: Ensure buffer solutions are at room temperature.
  2. Rinse Electrode: Rinse the pH electrode and ATC probe with distilled water and gently blot dry.
  3. Start Calibration: Refer to the meter's on-screen prompts or specific button sequence (usually a "CAL" button) to enter calibration mode.
  4. First Buffer: Immerse the electrode and ATC probe into the first buffer solution (e.g., pH 7.00). Wait for the reading to stabilize, then confirm.
  5. Second Buffer: Rinse the electrode and probe, then immerse them into the second buffer solution (e.g., pH 4.01 or 10.00). Wait for stabilization and confirm.
  6. Complete Calibration: The meter will indicate when calibration is complete.

Taking Measurements

  1. Rinse Electrode: Rinse the calibrated electrode and ATC probe with distilled water.
  2. Immerse in Sample: Immerse the electrode and ATC probe into the sample solution. Ensure the electrode junction and temperature sensor are fully submerged.
  3. Stabilize Reading: Allow sufficient time for the reading to stabilize. The meter will typically display a "READY" indicator when stable.
  4. Record Reading: Note the pH and temperature values displayed.
  5. Clean After Use: Rinse the electrode and probe thoroughly with distilled water after each measurement.

Maintenance

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Unstable readingsDirty electrode; air bubbles; electrode not fully immersed; expired buffer; damaged electrode.Clean electrode; gently tap electrode to remove bubbles; ensure full immersion; use fresh buffer; replace electrode.
Inaccurate readingsImproper calibration; expired buffer; electrode not conditioned; temperature difference.Recalibrate with fresh buffers; condition electrode; ensure ATC probe is functioning.
Meter does not power onPower adapter disconnected; faulty power outlet; meter malfunction.Check power connections; try a different outlet; contact technical support.
