Important Safety Instructions
When using your iron, basic safety precautions should always be followed, including the following:
- Read all instructions before using the iron.
- Use the iron only for its intended use.
- To protect against a risk of electric shock, do not immerse the iron in water or other liquids.
- The iron should always be turned to "Off" before plugging or unplugging from outlet. Never yank cord to disconnect from outlet; instead, grasp plug and pull to disconnect.
- Do not allow cord to touch hot surfaces. Let iron cool completely before putting away. Loop cord loosely around iron when storing.
- Always disconnect iron from electrical outlet when filling with water or emptying, and when not in use.
- Do not operate iron with a damaged cord or if the iron has been dropped or damaged. To avoid the risk of electric shock, do not disassemble the iron; take it to a qualified serviceman for examination and repair. Incorrect reassembly can cause a risk of electric shock when the iron is used subsequently.
- Close supervision is necessary for any appliance being used by or near children. Do not leave iron unattended while connected or on an ironing board.
- Burns can occur from touching hot metal parts, hot water, or steam. Use caution when you turn a steam iron upside down – there might be hot water in the reservoir.
- WARNING: This appliance is designed for 220-240 Volts and is not suitable for use in the USA or Canada. Ensure your power supply matches the iron's voltage requirements.

Key Components:
- Soleplate: The heated metal plate that glides over fabric.
- Water Tank: Reservoir for water used to generate steam.
- Temperature Control Dial: Adjusts the heat setting for different fabric types.
- Steam Control Lever/Button: Regulates the amount of steam or activates steam shot.
- Spray Nozzle: For misting fabric.
- Filling Inlet: Where water is added to the tank.
- Power Cord: Connects the iron to the electrical outlet.
Setup
1. Unpacking
- Carefully remove the iron from its packaging.
- Remove any protective films or stickers from the soleplate or body of the iron.
- Retain the packaging for future storage or transport.
2. First Use
During the first use, a slight odor or small amount of smoke may be emitted. This is normal and will disappear after a short period of use. It is recommended to iron an old piece of fabric for a few minutes to ensure any manufacturing residues are removed.
3. Filling the Water Tank
- Ensure the iron is unplugged from the electrical outlet.
- Set the steam control to the "Dry Ironing" position (no steam).
- Open the water filling inlet.
- Fill the water tank with tap water up to the "MAX" level indicator. Do not overfill.
- Close the water filling inlet securely.
Note: In areas with very hard water, it is recommended to mix 50% tap water with 50% distilled water to prolong the life of the iron. Do not use 100% distilled water as it can cause spitting.
Operating Instructions
1. Setting the Temperature
- Plug the iron into a suitable 220-240V electrical outlet.
- Turn the temperature control dial to the desired setting according to the fabric type. Refer to the garment's care label.
- The indicator light will illuminate, indicating the iron is heating. It will turn off when the set temperature is reached.
2. Steam Ironing
Steam ironing is suitable for most fabrics, especially cotton and linen. Ensure the water tank is filled.

Figure 2: Diagram illustrating the internal steam generation process within the iron, showing water converting to steam and exiting through the soleplate.
- Set the temperature control to a steam-compatible setting (usually indicated on the dial).
- Once the iron reaches the set temperature, adjust the steam control lever to the desired steam output (variable steam up to 50g/min).
- Begin ironing.

Figure 3: Illustration of the variable steam output, providing up to 50g/min for effective wrinkle removal.
3. Steam Shot Function
For stubborn creases, use the powerful steam shot function (up to 220g).
- Ensure the iron is at its maximum temperature setting.
- Press the steam shot button repeatedly for bursts of steam. Allow a few seconds between each shot for the steam to regenerate.

4. Vertical Steaming
The iron can be used for vertical steaming of hanging garments, curtains, or drapes.
- Hold the iron vertically, a few centimeters away from the fabric.
- Press the steam shot button to release bursts of steam.
5. Dry Ironing
For delicate fabrics or when steam is not desired:
- Ensure the water tank is empty or the steam control is set to the "Dry Ironing" position.
- Set the temperature control dial to the appropriate setting for the fabric.
- Iron without steam.
6. Auto Shutoff Feature
For safety and energy saving, the iron is equipped with an auto shutoff feature. If left unattended horizontally for 30 seconds or vertically for 8 minutes, the iron will automatically turn off. The indicator light will flash to signal this. To restart, simply move the iron.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your iron.
1. Cleaning the Soleplate

Figure 5: Close-up of the Microsteam 400 soleplate, featuring numerous steam holes for even steam distribution.
- Ensure the iron is unplugged and completely cool.
- Wipe the soleplate with a damp cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner if necessary.
- Do not use abrasive scouring pads, metal objects, or chemical cleaners as these can damage the soleplate.
2. Descaling (Anti-Calc System)
The Rowenta DW9230 is equipped with an anti-calc system to reduce limescale buildup. However, periodic descaling is still recommended, especially in hard water areas.
- Refer to the specific descaling instructions provided in the full product manual or on the Rowenta website for your model.
- Generally, this involves filling the tank with a descaling solution (or water/vinegar mixture as per instructions), heating the iron, and then flushing out the solution through the steam holes.
3. Storage
- Always unplug the iron and allow it to cool completely before storing.
- Empty any remaining water from the tank.
- Store the iron in an upright position to prevent soleplate damage.
- Loop the power cord loosely around the iron.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your iron, consult the following common problems and solutions before contacting customer service.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Iron does not heat up. | Not plugged in; power outlet faulty; auto shutoff activated. | Check power connection; test outlet with another appliance; move iron to reactivate. |
| No steam or insufficient steam. | Water tank empty; temperature too low for steam; steam control set to dry; calc buildup. | Fill water tank; set temperature to steam-compatible range; adjust steam control; perform descaling. |
| Water leaking from soleplate. | Temperature too low for steam; water tank overfilled; iron left horizontal too long with steam on. | Increase temperature; do not overfill tank; ensure iron is hot enough before using steam; store upright. |
| White flakes coming from soleplate. | Limescale buildup. | Perform descaling procedure. Use a mix of tap and distilled water in hard water areas. |
| Iron sticks to fabric. | Soleplate dirty; temperature too high for fabric. | Clean soleplate; adjust temperature according to fabric type. |
