Introduction

The Generac 6485 Maintenance Kit is designed for routine maintenance of Generac standby home generators equipped with 20-Kilowatt or 22-Kilowatt, 999cc engines. Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance, reliability, and longevity of your generator. This kit provides the necessary components for a standard service interval, helping to ensure your generator operates efficiently when needed most.

Kit Contents

The Generac 6485 Maintenance Kit includes the following items:

Note: Engine oil is not included and must be purchased separately. Refer to your generator's owner's manual for the recommended oil type and capacity.

Maintenance Schedule

Generac recommends performing maintenance on your standby generator every 200 hours of operation or every 2 years, whichever comes first. If your generator operates in a dusty environment, more frequent maintenance may be required to prevent premature wear and ensure optimal performance.

For the most accurate and detailed maintenance schedules specific to your generator model, always consult your generator's owner's manual.

Maintenance Procedures

Before beginning any maintenance, ensure the generator is turned off, the main circuit breaker is open, and the battery is disconnected to prevent accidental startup or electrical shock. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

1. Spark Plug Replacement

The Champion RC12YC spark plugs are typically pre-gapped at 0.038 inches (0.96 mm). Generac recommends a gap of 0.040 inches (1.02 mm). Adjust the gap slightly using a spark plug gap gauge if necessary before installation.

  1. Locate and carefully remove the spark plug wires from the existing spark plugs.
  2. Use a 5/8-inch spark plug socket and a torque wrench to remove the old spark plugs.
  3. Install the new spark plugs, ensuring they are torqued to 25 Newton Meters (18.4 ft-lbs). Avoid using flexible extensions with the torque wrench as this can lead to inaccurate readings.
  4. Reconnect the spark plug wires securely.

2. Air Filter Replacement

  1. Locate the air filter housing on your generator.
  2. Release the clip(s) located underneath the front lip of the housing.
  3. Pull the housing backward to disengage the tabs from the square-shaped openings at the back, then remove the housing cover.
  4. Carefully remove the old air filter and replace it with the new one from the kit.
  5. Install the pre-cleaner over the new air filter.
  6. Reattach the housing cover by aligning the tabs and securing the clip(s).

3. Oil Change and Oil Filter Replacement

It is recommended to run the generator for approximately 5 minutes before changing the oil to warm it up. This helps the oil drain more completely. After warming, turn the generator off and ensure it is cool enough to work on safely.

  1. Locate the flexible oil drain tube. Unscrew the cap and drain the old oil into a suitable container for recycling.
  2. Place several layers of paper towels or the blue cloth provided under and around the oil filter to catch any spills.
  3. Unscrew the old oil filter by hand (turn counter-clockwise).
  4. Apply a thin film of clean engine oil to the rubber gasket of the new oil filter.
  5. Hand-tighten the new oil filter until the gasket makes contact, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn.
  6. Add approximately 1.9 quarts of new engine oil using the oil funnel provided.
  7. Check the oil level using the dipstick. The oil level should be just above the upper hole on the dipstick. Hold the dipstick at a slight angle to the light for better visibility.
  8. Replace the drain hose cap and secure it in its holder.

Note: The exact oil capacity and type can be found in your generator's owner's manual. Using the correct oil is vital for engine health.

4. Post-Maintenance Check

  1. Reconnect the battery and manually start the generator.
  2. Allow the generator to run briefly and carefully check for any oil leaks around the new filter or other components.
  3. Shut down the generator and recheck the oil level. Add more oil if necessary to reach the proper level.
  4. Place the preventative maintenance reminder sticker in a visible location on your generator and note the date and hours of service for future reference.
  5. Return the generator to "Auto" mode to ensure it is ready for operation.
