4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

The Hioki IR4056-20 requires four (4) AA alkaline batteries for operation. To install or replace batteries:

  1. Ensure the device is turned OFF and all test leads are disconnected.
  2. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the unit.
  3. Use a screwdriver to open the battery compartment cover.
  4. Insert the four AA batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  5. Securely close the battery compartment cover.

4.2 Initial Checks

Before first use or after battery replacement, perform these checks:

  • Turn the rotary switch from OFF to any measurement function. The LCD should illuminate and display readings.
  • Verify battery level indicator on the display.
  • Ensure test leads are free from damage and securely connected.

5. Operating Instructions

This section details the operation of the Hioki IR4056-20 for various measurement functions.

5.1 Insulation Resistance Measurement

To measure insulation resistance:

  1. Turn the rotary switch to the desired insulation test voltage (50V, 125V, 250V, 500V, or 1000V). The display will show the selected voltage.
  2. Connect the test leads to the circuit under test. Ensure proper connection to EARTH and LINE terminals.
  3. Press and hold the MEASURE button. The measurement will begin, and the result will be displayed.
  4. For 500V/1000V ranges, if the "PRESS RELEASE KEY" message appears, press the 500V/1000V RELEASE button to confirm the high voltage test.
  5. The device provides a quick PASS/FAIL decision in approximately 0.8 seconds.
  6. Release the MEASURE button to stop the measurement.

5.2 Continuity Measurement (200mA)

To perform a continuity check:

  1. Turn the rotary switch to the Ω (200mA CONTINUITY) position.
  2. Connect the test leads to the circuit or component you wish to test for continuity.
  3. The resistance value will be displayed. A low resistance value indicates continuity.
  4. Use the 0Ω ADJ button to zero out the resistance of the test leads for more accurate readings.

5.3 AC/DC Voltage Measurement

To measure AC or DC voltage:

  1. Turn the rotary switch to the V (Voltage) position.
  2. Connect the test leads across the voltage source.
  3. The measured voltage (AC or DC) will be displayed on the LCD.

5.4 Other Functions

  • LIGHT Button: Press to illuminate the LCD backlight for better visibility in low-light conditions.
  • COMP Button: Used for comparison functions, allowing you to set reference values for PASS/FAIL judgments. Refer to the detailed specifications for setting comparison values.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning

Wipe the instrument with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.

6.2 Battery Replacement

Replace the four AA batteries when the battery indicator on the display shows low power. Follow the steps in Section 4.1.

6.3 Fuse Replacement

If the fuse needs replacement, ensure the device is OFF and test leads are disconnected. Use a screwdriver to access the fuse compartment (typically near the battery compartment). Replace with a fuse of the specified rating (refer to the device labeling or full product manual for exact specifications, e.g., F0.5AH / 500V as seen in some product images).

6.4 Storage

When storing the device for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and damage. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
